Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has been released from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), weeks after his detention over alleged financial misconduct.

The development was disclosed on Friday by his son, Bashir El-Rufai, via a post on X (formerly Twitter), where he confirmed that his father had regained freedom. He also expressed appreciation to supporters while criticising the anti-graft agency, describing the detention as unjust.

El-Rufai had been in ICPC custody since February 18, 2026, following allegations bordering on financial impropriety and related offences. However, as of the time of filing this report, the commission has yet to issue an official statement detailing the terms of his release or the status of ongoing investigations.

The former governor’s release comes amid a period of personal loss, following the reported death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, earlier on Friday in Cairo, Egypt.

While the circumstances surrounding his temporary release remain unclear, the development is expected to generate political and legal reactions, particularly regarding the next steps in the ICPC’s probe.
