Massive Fire Guts Akim Timber Market, Traders Count Losses
A devastating fire has razed large sections of the popular Akim Timber Market in Calabar, sending panic across the bustling commercial hub late Friday night.
The inferno, which reportedly started in the evening, tore through the market, one of the major centres for timber and allied businesses in the state, fuelled by highly combustible materials. Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising into the night sky as flames spread rapidly across stalls.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as traders scrambled to salvage goods, while others watched helplessly as their wares were consumed by the raging fire.
Emergency responders, including fire service officials, were deployed to the scene and are currently battling to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjoining areas.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities have yet to confirm the cause of the fire or any casualties. However, traders and market leaders fear heavy financial losses as the fire continues to burn through sections of the market.

The incident adds to growing concerns over fire safety in major markets, especially those dealing in flammable goods.
