The Federal Government has warned that at least 266 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory are at high risk of flooding in 2026.

The alert was contained in the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook released in Abuja by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency.

Presenting the report, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, said over 14,000 communities fall within the high-risk flood zones.

He added that another 15,000 communities across 405 LGAs are projected to experience moderate flooding during the year.

The report also highlighted the likelihood of flash floods in major urban centres, including Abuja, Lagos, Kano, and Port Harcourt.

Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, said the administration is strengthening emergency response mechanisms and enhancing inter-agency coordination to mitigate the impact of flooding.

He assured that proactive measures are being put in place to reduce disaster risks and safeguard vulnerable communities across the country.
