No Launch Date Yet: Meta Postpones Release of New AI Model for Developers
Meta Platforms has reportedly postponed the release of its new artificial intelligence model for developers several times, raising fresh questions about the company’s efforts to compete in the rapidly evolving AI industry.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Meta has repeatedly pushed back plans to launch the developer-facing application programming interface (API) for its latest AI model, known as Muse Spark. The report said the company had no confirmed public release date as of early June despite earlier indications that the tool would be available soon.
Muse Spark, unveiled by Meta in April, represents a major shift in the company’s AI strategy. Unlike the company’s previous open-source Llama models, Muse Spark is a proprietary model designed to be accessed through an API, allowing developers to integrate its capabilities into software applications and services.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the release was initially expected alongside the model’s launch in April but was delayed due to technical issues, including bugs and infrastructure challenges. The company is reportedly continuing to test the API with a limited number of partners.
In a statement cited by Reuters, a Meta spokesperson said the company is already working with early partners and remains optimistic about releasing the API later this month. The spokesperson did not provide a specific launch date.
The delay comes as Meta intensifies its efforts to challenge leading AI companies such as openai, deepmind google, and anthropic. The company has invested heavily in AI research, talent recruitment, and infrastructure, with plans to spend up to $145 billion on capital expenditures this year as it pursues its long-term goal of developing advanced AI systems.
Industry observers note that a successful API launch is crucial for Meta’s ability to monetize its AI technology. Access through APIs allows developers and businesses to build applications powered by AI models, creating potential new revenue streams beyond the company’s traditional advertising business.
The latest delay follows previous challenges in Meta’s AI development efforts, including setbacks involving earlier large-language models. Despite the postponement, the company maintains that Muse Spark remains a key part of its strategy to close the gap with industry leaders in artificial intelligence.
