Meta Employees Launch Protest Against Mouse-Tracking Technology at US Offices

Employees at Meta Platforms have launched an internal protest campaign against newly introduced mouse-tracking software at several company offices across the United States, intensifying tensions over workplace surveillance and looming layoffs.

According to reports from Reuters and other media outlets, workers distributed flyers in meeting rooms, restrooms and common office spaces urging colleagues to oppose the software and sign an online petition. The pamphlets described the system as an “Employee Data Extraction Factory” and accused the company of using staff activity to train artificial intelligence systems that could eventually replace human workers.

The backlash comes just days before Meta is expected to begin another major round of layoffs affecting roughly 10% of its workforce. Employees have reportedly expressed fears that the monitoring technology is part of the company’s broader push toward AI-driven restructuring.

Meta defended the software, saying it is designed to help improve AI agents by collecting examples of how users interact with computers, including mouse movements, clicks and navigation patterns. Company spokesperson Andy Stone said the data helps train systems intended to assist users with everyday computing tasks.

The protest marks one of the most visible signs of labor organizing inside Meta in recent years. Protest materials referenced the U.S. National Labor Relations Act, reminding employees that organizing around workplace conditions is legally protected. In the United Kingdom, some Meta staff have also begun a unionization drive with the United Tech and Allied Workers union.

The controversy has sparked broader debates across the tech industry about employee privacy, AI automation and the growing use of workplace surveillance tools. Critics argue that companies are increasingly using productivity-monitoring systems to gather behavioral data while reducing transparency about how the information will ultimately be used.
