The Citizens’ Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (CASER) has commended the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for responding to its request under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, 2011, describing the agency’s action as a positive demonstration of transparency and accountability.

In a statement issued on Monday, CASER’s Executive Director and Lead Advocate, Frank Tietie, said NIMASA provided a substantial volume of the information and documents requested, enabling the organisation to advance its commitment to promoting openness and good governance in public institutions.

According to the civil society organisation, NIMASA’s response reflects respect for the provisions of the FOI Act and signals the agency’s willingness to engage constructively with civil society on issues of public interest.

CASER disclosed that it has commenced a detailed review and analysis of the documents received, noting that the volume and significance of the materials require a careful, objective and comprehensive assessment.

The organisation said it would communicate its findings after completing the review and, where necessary, make recommendations or take further steps in the public interest.

Reaffirming the importance of the Freedom of Information Act, CASER described the law as a critical tool for strengthening democratic governance and enhancing public confidence in government institutions.

It also urged other public institutions to emulate NIMASA by responding promptly and fully to lawful requests for information, while reaffirming its commitment to promoting transparency, institutional accountability and the rule of law through constructive engagement.
