‘Spider-Man’ Rules Box Office for Fourth Weekend as ‘The Odyssey’ Sets New Nolan Record

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has held on to the top spot at the North American box office for a fourth consecutive weekend, while Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has become the highest-grossing film of the acclaimed director’s career.

The latest box-office figures highlight an exceptionally strong summer for Hollywood, with major franchises and original productions continuing to draw large audiences to cinemas.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned an estimated $39 million from 4,006 cinemas across the United States and Canada during its fourth weekend, according to studio estimates reported by the Associated Press. The latest haul pushed its North American total beyond $854.9 million.

The Marvel and Sony superhero movie is now closing in on Avengers: Endgame for second place on the list of the highest-grossing films ever in the North American market. Star Wars: The Force Awakens currently holds the domestic record.

Internationally, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has also continued its remarkable run, taking its worldwide earnings to about $2.22 billion, putting it among the highest-grossing films in cinema history.

The film, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, faced competition from several new releases but remained firmly at No. 1.

Sony’s horror sequel Insidious: Out of the Further opened in second place with an estimated $25.3 million domestically. The film added another $35 million internationally.

Meanwhile, The Odyssey moved into third place for the weekend after earning approximately $19.5 million in North America.

Despite the third-place finish, the Christopher Nolan epic achieved a major milestone. Its worldwide earnings have reached about $1.4 billion, making it the biggest-grossing film of Nolan’s career, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises. Its domestic total has also climbed beyond $539 million.

The film, an adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic, stars Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o and Robert Pattinson.

Earlier in the week, The Odyssey also surpassed Deadpool & Wolverine to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever worldwide, further cementing its commercial success.

Other new releases had a more modest showing.

Jason Statham’s Mutiny opened in sixth place with about $7.5 million, while the comedy Spa Weekend debuted with approximately $3.1 million.

The strong performance of the leading films has contributed to an unusually robust summer movie season. North American summer ticket sales have reached an estimated $4.4 billion, while the year-to-date box office has surpassed $7 billion; about 20% higher than the same period in 2025.

Industry executives have attributed the resurgence partly to the recovery of Hollywood’s production pipeline following the strikes that disrupted the industry in 2023, as well as renewed enthusiasm among moviegoers.

With Spider-Man: Brand New Day continuing its record-breaking run and The Odyssey rewriting Nolan’s box-office history, Hollywood’s 2026 summer season is shaping up as one of the industry’s strongest in years.
