Nollywood Mourns Veteran Actor Diewait Ikpechukwu, Dies At 71 After Prolonged Illness
The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor, Diewait Ikpechukwu, who reportedly died on November 5, 2026, at the age of 71 after a prolonged illness.
His death was confirmed by a family source, who disclosed the development to Daily Post but declined to reveal the nature of the illness that preceded his passing.
The National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Alhaji Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, also announced the actor’s death in an Instagram tribute on Friday, November 6, describing him as another legendary figure whose contributions to the industry would remain memorable.
Ikpechukwu was a familiar face in Nollywood, particularly recognised for his compelling portrayals of traditional rulers, kings, elderly statesmen and influential personalities in Nigerian movies.
His acting career spanned more than 25 years, during which he established a reputation for bringing authority, cultural depth and authenticity to roles centred on African traditions and institutions.
Born on August 23, 1955, in southeastern Nigeria, Ikpechukwu had an interesting career journey that extended beyond the entertainment industry.
Before venturing into acting, he was an accomplished footballer who played as a right winger in the 1970s. His footballing ability reportedly earned him an invitation to the Green Eagles camp, Nigeria’s former senior national football team.
He featured for clubs including Blue Diamonds of Nsukka and Kaduna Rocks and also captained the Kaduna Polytechnic football team.
While studying in Kaduna, he developed an interest in broadcasting and reportedly worked with radio stations as a football commentator, gaining early exposure to the media and entertainment industry.
Academically, Ikpechukwu attended Comprehensive High School, Awo-Omamma, in Imo State, before proceeding to Kaduna State Polytechnic, where he obtained a Higher National Diploma in Marketing.
He subsequently completed his National Youth Service Corps programme at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and later earned a postgraduate diploma in Marketing from Enugu State University of Science and Technology.
Before fully embracing entertainment, he worked with the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL), where he served as a business office manager.
His eventual transition into acting followed his involvement in television productions at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Enugu.
Ikpechukwu made his feature film debut in Evil Men in 1998, where he played a traditional ruler. The movie also featured established Nollywood actors, including Pete Edochie, Alex Usifo and Liz Benson.
The production marked a turning point in his acting career, opening the door to several roles that would eventually make him a recognisable figure in the Nigerian movie industry.
His death represents another loss to Nollywood, particularly to an industry whose growth and cultural influence have been shaped by veteran performers who helped establish its identity.
Tributes are expected from colleagues, fans and admirers as the industry remembers his contributions to Nigerian cinema.
