Dennis Haskins, Who Played Principal Belding for More Than a Decade, Dies at 75

Dennis Haskins, the actor best known for playing Principal Richard Belding on the hit television sitcom “Saved by the Bell,” has died at the age of 75.

Haskins’ death was confirmed by his longtime agent, Jay Schachter, who described it as a “tragic loss” and remembered the actor as someone who deeply loved his fans. Schachter said Haskins had been his client and close friend for more than 20 years. A cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

Haskins became widely recognised through his portrayal of Principal Belding, the stern but affectionate head of Bayside High School in “Saved by the Bell.” The NBC sitcom, which premiered in 1989, followed a group of teenagers whose schemes frequently left the school principal trying to maintain order.

Although Belding was often frustrated by his students’ antics, the character became one of the show’s most recognisable adult figures. Haskins remained associated with the role for more than a decade, first appearing as Belding in “Good Morning, Miss Bliss,” the series that was later reworked into “Saved by the Bell.”

“Saved by the Bell” ran from 1989 to 1993 and starred Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Mario Lopez, Tiffani Thiessen, Elizabeth Berkley, Lark Voorhies and Dustin Diamond alongside Haskins. He subsequently continued as Principal Belding in the spinoff “Saved by the Bell: The New Class,” which ran from 1993 to 2000.

Haskins’ career extended well beyond “Saved by the Bell.” He had television appearances in programmes including “Magnum, P.I.,” “The Twilight Zone,” “The Dukes of Hazzard” and “Knots Landing.” Later in his career, he appeared in shows including “Mad Men” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”

Born on November 18, 1950, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Haskins developed an interest in performance while attending the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. His university biography says he participated in drama activities and helped establish the Harlequins theatre group. Before establishing himself as an actor, he also worked in music management, with clients including Tom Jones and Gregg Allman.

News of his death prompted tributes from people associated with “Saved by the Bell.” Lark Voorhies, who played Lisa Turtle, said she was heartbroken by the loss and described knowing Haskins for almost 40 years as a blessing.

Haskins also remained connected to the show’s fan base long after the original series ended. His agent said he consistently made time for fans, describing that relationship as an important part of his legacy.

For generations of television viewers, however, his most enduring association remains Principal Belding; the adult authority figure at Bayside High who became an integral part of one of the defining American teen sitcoms of the late 1980s and 1990s.

Dennis Haskins leaves behind a television legacy closely tied to a character who became familiar to millions of viewers and helped make “Saved by the Bell” a lasting part of popular culture.
