UK Awards 68 Nigerians Chevening, Commonwealth Scholarships For Postgraduate Studies

The United Kingdom Government has awarded Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships to 68 Nigerians for postgraduate studies in the UK, describing the initiative as an investment in Nigeria’s next generation of leaders and professionals.

The beneficiaries, selected through competitive application and interview processes, will undertake master’s and PhD programmes across various fields during the 2026 academic session. Pre-departure ceremonies for the scholars were held in Abuja and Lagos.

Of the 68 Nigerians selected, 12 received Chevening Scholarships, while 56 were awarded Commonwealth Scholarships.

Speaking at the pre-departure reception in Abuja, the Chargée d’Affaires of the British High Commission in Nigeria, Vicky Seymour, congratulated the scholars on their selection and urged them to maximise the opportunities provided by their studies and professional exposure in the UK.

Seymour described the scholarships as an investment in both the beneficiaries and Nigeria’s future, noting that the scholars would have access to world-class education, professional networks and diverse experiences.

She encouraged them to return to Nigeria and apply the knowledge and skills gained abroad to addressing national challenges and contributing to the country’s development.

The British envoy also expressed confidence that the latest beneficiaries would build on the achievements of previous Chevening and Commonwealth scholars who have contributed to Nigeria’s development across different sectors.

Among the beneficiaries is Sarah Nathaniel Yanayork, a Chevening Scholar who will study International Human Rights Law at the University of Essex.

Yanayork described her selection as the culmination of a three-year journey of resilience and personal growth, saying the scholarship would enable her to deepen her work and commitment to human rights, good governance and inclusive development.

Another beneficiary, Abubakar Umar, who has a hearing impairment, will study Special Educational Needs at the University of Exeter under the Commonwealth Scholarship.

Umar described the award as particularly significant because of its emphasis on inclusion, saying his journey demonstrated the importance of resilience and the need to build systems that provide opportunities for people with disabilities.

The Chevening and Commonwealth programmes are designed to support talented individuals with demonstrated intellectual ability, leadership potential and a commitment to contributing to the development of their home countries.

The UK Government said more than 5,237 Nigerians have so far benefited from the two scholarship programmes.

Many of the alumni have gone on to occupy influential positions and contribute to national development across different sectors, reinforcing the role of the programmes in developing Nigeria’s human capital.

Meanwhile, applications for the 2027–2028 scholarship cycle are expected to provide another opportunity for qualified Nigerians seeking postgraduate study in the United Kingdom.
