Nigeria’s Amos Dangut Takes Over As WAEC Registrar
Nigerian education administrator, Amos Dangut, has assumed office as the 14th Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
Dangut officially took over on October 1, 2026, succeeding Pateh Bah of The Gambia, following his appointment to a five-year tenure that will run until September 2031.
His appointment was ratified by the Council, WAEC’s international governing board, at its 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.
Before his new appointment, Dangut served as Head of the WAEC National Office in Nigeria, a position he assumed in October 2023.
Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production, a Master of Science in Animal Science, a PhD in Animal Science and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning.
He began his professional career in education in 1994 at St Louis College, Jos, where he served as a WAEC examiner, before joining the Council as a staff member in 1998.
Over the years, he served in various capacities within WAEC, including Assistant Registrar and Subject Officer in the Test Development Division; Head of Examinations Security; Branch Controller in Yola; Controller of the Post Examinations Department; Zonal Coordinator in Ikeja; and Deputy Registrar in the Office of the Head of National Office.
WAEC described Dangut as an experienced administrator and test developer with expertise in test development, examination administration and branch and zonal office management.
During his tenure as Head of the National Office, he championed several reforms aimed at improving examination delivery, security and efficiency, including the rollout of Computer-Based WASSCE, serialisation of question papers and the introduction of a Digital Electronic Marking System.
He also oversaw the development of digital services including the WAEC Digital Certificate Portal, E-Study Platform and Digital Records Archive, as well as systems for examination logistics, timetable management and monitoring examiners’ attendance.
As Head of the National Office, Dangut also served on the governing boards of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and Grange Educational Foundation.
WAEC said his career had been marked by integrity, diligence and commitment to service, adding that he had received commendations for his handling of examination matters.
Dangut, who has published in national and international journals and presented papers at several conferences, currently serves as the West African sub-region’s representative on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.
His assumption of office places him at the helmof WAEC as the council continues to pursue reforms in examination administration, digital assessment and the strengthening of examination integrity across West Africa.
