Mobile Police Officer Hacked to Death in Plateau While Heading to Duty Post
A mobile police officer, Abdulrahman Auwal, has been killed in a machete attack in Plateau State, security sources have confirmed.
The incident occurred at about 6:51 p.m. on Thursday along Kwi Road in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, according to reports citing the counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama.
The officer was reportedly on his way to his duty post in the Chit area of Heipang District when the assailants struck.
Troops of Operation Enduring Peace responded to a distress report, but the attackers had fled before their arrival.
The victim was found with multiple machete wounds and was rushed to a hospital by colleagues, where he was pronounced dead.
Reports indicate the assailants also fled with the officer’s motorcycle.
The spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders-Association, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the killing and described it as disturbing.
Tengwong said the attack raised serious concerns about the safety of residents, particularly as security personnel deployed to protect communities were also coming under attack.
He condemned the killing and called for urgent measures to address the security challenges in the area.
Security personnel have commenced an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible for possible arrest.
The Plateau State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Alabo Alfred, did not respond to inquiries as of press time.
The killing comes amid heightened tensions in Mangu, Bokkos and Barkin Ladi local government areas, where curfews were recently imposed to contain unrest.
