ASUU UNIBEN Suspends Strike as Lecturers Resume Academic Activities
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Benin branch, has suspended its indefinite strike and directed members to resume full academic activities with immediate effect.
The suspension was announced in an official statement signed by Branch Chairman Enaruna Edosa and Secretary L. O. Aimiyekagbon, following a congress resolution and approval by the union’s National Executive Council.
The decision followed the University Administration’s full payment of staff emoluments for September 2026.
The union had earlier declared a total and indefinite withdrawal of services on October 5, 2026, over the underpayment of September emoluments by the Federal Government.
“This directive is as a result of Congress’s decision to suspend the action of withdrawal of services… having secured approval of its National Leadership (ASUU NEC). The suspension was necessitated by the University Administration’s full payment of the emoluments of September 2026,” the statement read.
Academic staff have been instructed to resume all academic activities with immediate effect, including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervision, seminars, and attendance at statutory meetings.
The branch leadership thanked members for their solidarity throughout the brief industrial action.
The development is expected to restore normal academic operations at the University of Benin after the short disruption.
