Security Forces Repel Bandit Attack in Zamfara, Discover Over 30 Bodies
Security operatives have repelled an attempted bandit attack on Bukuyum town in Zamfara State, with more than 30 bodies believed to be those of suspected bandits discovered in surrounding farmlands after a fierce gun battle.
The Zamfara State Police Command said the operation was part of an ongoing clearance exercise aimed at flushing armed criminal elements out of Bukuyum Local Government Area.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, the operation began on October 28 following an attempt by armed bandits to invade Bukuyum town.
He said police personnel, working alongside local civil security operatives, engaged the attackers in a gun battle and successfully prevented them from advancing into the community.
“The security operatives demonstrated exceptional courage, professionalism and determination in defending the town and protecting its residents,” the statement said.
Following the confrontation, more than 30 bodies believed to be those of neutralised bandits were reportedly discovered in farmlands surrounding the area.
The police said the discovery suggested that the attackers may have suffered significant casualties during the exchange of gunfire, although the actual number of casualties remained subject to further verification.
The command noted that armed bandits were known to evacuate their injured and dead members from battle locations.
According to the police, the successful defence of Bukuyum town prevented the attackers from gaining access to the community and averted possible loss of lives, destruction of property and further displacement of residents.
The command also said preliminary security assessments indicated that sustained pressure from the ongoing operations had forced some of the remaining bandits to flee the state.
The police assured residents that the clearance operations would continue in collaboration with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders.
“The Zamfara State Police Command remains committed to sustaining the ongoing operations to rid the area of armed criminal elements, restore public confidence and ensure the safety and security of residents,” the statement added.
