The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged that one of its supporters was shot during a campaign tour involving the party’s Edo Central Senatorial candidate, Herberta Okonofua, in Igueben Local Government Area of Edo State.

The party alleged that the incident occurred at the premises of the Enogie of Igueben, where a group of assailants reportedly attacked the entourage of ADC chieftain, Kenneth Imasuangbon, and Okonofua.

In a statement issued by the party’s Edo State Publicity Secretary, Chris Ojeikere, the victim, identified as Jerry Oliha of ADC Ward 6, was allegedly shot during the attack and subsequently taken to Irrua Specialist Hospital, where he was receiving medical attention.

The ADC claimed the incident was the third reported shooting involving the entourage during its activities in the local government on Tuesday, alleging that earlier attacks occurred in Ward 4 and Ward 5.

The party further alleged that the attack resulted in the destruction of canopies, chairs and musical equipment worth millions of naira at the palace premises.

According to the statement, bullets recovered from the scene were handed over to the police and the Enogie, while the Divisional Police Officer in Igueben was also informed of the incident.

The ADC linked the alleged attack to growing political tensions in Edo State ahead of the 2027 elections, accusing members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of targeting its supporters.

The party specifically referenced recent controversial comments by Edo APC Chairman Jarrett Tenebe, who has been widely reported to have made an “AK-47 fire” remark while discussing the APC’s target of securing 2.5 million votes for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election. The remark has already triggered calls from the ADC and civil society groups for investigation.

However, the ADC’s allegation that the Igueben attack was connected to Tenebe’s remarks or was coordinated by APC local government chairmen has not been independently established.

The party said it would release a comprehensive report on what it described as a pattern of attacks against its members and infrastructure in Edo State.

It also called for security agencies to investigate the incident and establish those responsible for the reported shooting and destruction of property.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no independent confirmation from the police or APC authorities on the alleged shooting, the identity of the attackers or the circumstances surrounding the incident.
