President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has thrown his weight behind ongoing calls for state creation in Nigeria’s South-South region, revealing proposed capitals for two potential states in what could mark a significant political and administrative restructuring.

Speaking on Wednesday at the All Progressives Congress (APC) zonal convention in Asaba, Akpabio disclosed that Asaba would serve as the capital of the proposed Anioma State, while Warri would become the capital of a restructured Delta State, should the creation process be approved.

The Senate President made the remarks while addressing party members, noting that the agitation for Anioma State appeared to be a major demand from the region.

“If the creation affects Delta, let me clarify: Anioma State will have its capital in Asaba, while Delta State proper will have Warri as its capital. It is not a problem,” he said.

Akpabio also used the occasion to explain his appearance in traditional Anioma attire, attributing it to Delta North senator, Ned Nwoko. According to him, the gesture was symbolic of support for the proposed state.

“Senator Ned Nwoko gave me the attire deliberately to demonstrate backing for Anioma State. When I realised the intention, I said, ‘what a trap,’” he remarked humorously.

Despite the light-hearted tone, Akpabio expressed strong support for the creation of additional states, arguing that it would drive development and bring governance closer to the people.

“I don’t think we should be afraid. The more states we have, the more development we can achieve,” he said.

He added that the proposal would require approval from various State Houses of Assembly before it could become a reality, in line with constitutional provisions.
