BANGLADESH TRIBUNAL SENTENCES EXILED LEADER SHEIKH HASINA TO DEATH
A special tribunal in Bangladesh sentenced ousted leader Sheikh Hasina to death on Monday for crimes against humanity.
The charges stem from her role in the killing of hundreds of protesters during the July 2024 uprising that led to the collapse of her regime in August.
Golam Mortuza Mozumder, the head of the three-member International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), announced the guilty verdict before a packed courtroom in Dhaka.
The 78-year-old Hasina was tried in absentia, having fled to India in August 2024 during the mass uprising. ICT prosecutor Shyikh Mahdi confirmed the charges were based on what he called her broader role in the killing spree.
