Court Remands Nurse Over Alleged Abortion, Death of Ogun Corps Member
A Magistrates’ Court in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has ordered the remand of a 37-year-old nurse, Kehinde Adesanya, over her alleged involvement in a case of attempted abortion and the death of a National Youth Service Corps member.
Adesanya was arraigned on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, attempt to procure abortion, and murder.
The police prosecutor, Solomon Babalola, moved an ex parte application before the court, seeking an order to remand the defendant for 60 days at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the Ogun State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Babalola told the court that the alleged offences were committed between January and March in the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta. He alleged that the defendant conspired with accomplices still at large to procure an abortion for Victoria Ariyo, a 23-year-old corps member serving in Abeokuta.
According to the prosecution, Ariyo died from suspected complications arising from the procedure and was buried last week.
The prosecutor further informed the court that one Abass Olalekan, an official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) accused of impregnating the deceased, had earlier been arraigned and granted bail.
The alleged offences, according to the prosecution, contravene Sections 516, 230, 324, and 319 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
In her ruling, Magistrate O.O. Sam-Obaleye granted the application and ordered that Adesanya be remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the DPP.
The case was adjourned until May 26 for mention.
