Covenant University Confirms Student’s Death After Medical Emergency During Training
Covenant University has confirmed the death of one of its students, Toluwase Jesutunmise Emmanuel, following a medical emergency during a football training session on campus.
In a statement issued by the Office of the Vice-Chancellor on Wednesday, the institution disclosed that the incident occurred on Monday, April 6, 2026, when the student reportedly complained of leg pain and fatigue during training.
According to the university, the student stepped out of the game to rest, but his condition deteriorated shortly afterwards.
The statement explained that his teammates noticed he was gasping for breath and immediately rushed him to the university’s medical centre, located opposite the playing field. However, he had stopped breathing before arriving at the facility.
Medical personnel were said to have promptly initiated emergency procedures, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) using an automated external defibrillator (AED), in an effort to revive him.
Despite these efforts, the university said he was confirmed dead, attributing the cause to a previously undisclosed heart condition.
The institution dismissed claims of negligence, maintaining that there was no lapse in the response of its medical team or any shortage of necessary equipment.
It added that the university’s management, led by the Vice-Chancellor, remained at the medical centre throughout the incident and stayed with the family until burial arrangements were concluded.
Covenant University extended its condolences to the bereaved family, describing the incident as a painful loss to both the institution and society.
The university also appreciated members of the public for their concern and support during the period, urging continued prayers for the family.
