DELTA STATE POLYTECHNIC GOVERNING COUNCIL REFUSES TO REINSTATE SUSPENDED RECTOR

The Governing Council of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, has refused to reinstate its Rector, Bldr. (Prof.) Emmanuel Achuenu, despite objections raised by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari. The Council had suspended the Rector over allegations of financial impropriety and gross misconduct.

In a letter dated July 9, 2025, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Paul Adingwupu, reaffirmed the Council’s decision, citing its statutory mandate to discipline the Rector. “In the light of the foregoing and in the absence of infringement of any law on the part of the Council, we are unable to accede to your directives. Accordingly, the Rector remains suspended in line with Council resolution,” the letter read.

The Council argued that the procedures leading to the suspension were in compliance with the Delta State Polytechnic Law and dismissed the Commissioner’s directive for reinstatement. The letter was copied to the Executive Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Oborevwori, signaling a possible need for the Governor’s intervention in the impasse.
