ECOWAS at Crossroads: Diop Takes Charge, Vows to Rebuild West African Unity

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has commenced a new phase of leadership with Senegal’s General Birame Diop assuming office as President of the ECOWAS Commission amid calls for renewed unity, solidarity and stronger regional cooperation.

Diop succeeded Dr Omar Alieu Touray of The Gambia, who completed his four-year tenure at the regional body.

The formal transfer of leadership took place on Monday at the new ECOWAS Commission headquarters in Abuja, where the incoming president called on staff and stakeholders to put aside divisions and work towards strengthening the regional institution.

“My solemn appeal to all of you is to make way for unity and solidarity, based on mutual respect,” Diop said.

He said the effectiveness of West African integration would ultimately depend on the ability of ECOWAS to remain united and focused despite the political, security and economic difficulties confronting the region.

“A new chapter has been opened for West African integration. Let us work together to make it a chapter of peace, dignity and shared prosperity,” he said.

Nigeria Gets ECOWAS Vice Presidency

The leadership transition also saw Nigeria’s Anthony Ogunjimi assume the position of Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission.

He succeeds Damtien Tchintchibidja of Togo.

Other members of the new statutory leadership include Kalilou Sylla of Côte d’Ivoire, Commissioner for Internal Services; Francess Alghali of Sierra Leone, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security; and Dehpue Yenpea Zuo of Liberia, Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture.

Amin Amidu Sulemani of Ghana becomes Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy and Digitalisation, while Nassirou Bako-Arifari of Benin takes charge as Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs.

Also appointed are Carla Maria Borges Bettencourt of Cabo Verde as Auditor-General; Palokinam Pitche of Togo as Director-General of the West African Health Organisation; and Mam Cherno Jallow as Director-General of the Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa.

Touray Reflects on Four Years

Speaking at the handover ceremony, the outgoing Commission President, Touray, reflected on his administration’s four-year tenure and the institutional milestones recorded during the period.

Touray said his administration was leaving behind more than “memories, speeches and decisions”, describing its legacy as “a record” of accomplishments for the regional institution and West African integration.

The ceremony featured the unveiling of an ECOWAS@50 Special Exclusive Publication by Africa Agenda Network in partnership with the ECOWAS Commission.

The Management Performance Compendium was also presented to Diop, while the outgoing and incoming leadership formally signed the handover documents.

New Leadership Faces Regional Challenges

Diop assumes leadership at a particularly challenging period for ECOWAS, with the regional bloc grappling with political instability, security threats, economic difficulties and questions over the future direction of West African integration.

The withdrawal of some member states from the regional bloc has also created fresh challenges for ECOWAS’ cohesion and influence.

Against this backdrop, Diop’s emphasis on unity is expected to shape the priorities of his administration as the Commission seeks to strengthen regional cooperation and restore confidence in the ECOWAS integration project.

The new leadership will also be expected to advance efforts towards peace and security while promoting economic integration and shared prosperity across West Africa.

For ECOWAS, the transition marks not simply a change of officials but the beginning of another attempt to reinforce the foundations of a regional project facing one of its most difficult periods.
