Federal Government Launches FreeTV With Over 100 Free Channels

The Federal Government has officially launched FreeTV, a national digital television platform offering Nigerians access to more than 100 channels without monthly subscription fees.

The platform was unveiled on June 17 as part of the country’s ongoing Digital Switch-Over programme, marking a major step in the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting.

FreeTV provides diverse programming, including news, sports, movies, music, educational shows, children’s content, and dedicated Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo language channels.

The service is accessible via satellite, terrestrial transmission, and a dedicated mobile application, ensuring coverage across urban and rural communities.

Households will not need to purchase new television sets to access the platform. Existing TVs can connect using compatible DVB-T2 or DVB-S2 decoders, while many free-to-air decoder users may require no additional equipment.

NBC Director-General Charles Ebuebu stated, “With FreeTV, families across Nigeria can enjoy quality digital television without a monthly subscription, while our local content producers, technicians and young creatives gain new platforms and new jobs”.

The initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, prioritising digital inclusion and job creation.

Regional production hubs have been established in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kano, and Benin to drive local content development and create opportunities for media professionals . The final analogue switch-off remains scheduled for December 31, 2028.
