Germany Rejects Tinubu’s Ambassadorial Nominee Femi Fani-Kayode

The German government has reportedly declined the nomination of Femi Fani-Kayode as Nigeria’s ambassador, citing concerns over his past conduct and public statements.

The rejection followed his nomination by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu earlier in March for a diplomatic posting in Central Europe. However, German authorities reportedly refused to grant approval shortly after the nomination was submitted.

Sources indicate that the decision was based on what officials described as concerns about Fani-Kayode’s public behaviour and history of controversial remarks. Statements perceived as ethnocentric, tribal and religiously sensitive were said to have raised red flags about his suitability for diplomatic responsibilities.

The development comes amid reports of a recent disagreement involving the nominee and Richard Montgomery during a Ramadan dinner in Abuja, an incident that further drew scrutiny to his conduct.

Insiders suggest the Nigerian government may consider redeploying Fani-Kayode to another country, with South Africa mentioned as a possible alternative destination.

Fani-Kayode, a former minister, has remained a controversial figure in Nigerian politics, known for his outspoken views and past clashes with journalists. In 2020, he was involved in a widely criticised altercation with a reporter during a press briefing, an incident that later prompted a public apology.

He has also faced investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over allegations of fraud and money laundering, though the cases were eventually dismissed by the courts due to insufficient evidence.

The reported rejection underscores the role of host countries in approving diplomatic nominees and highlights how reputational considerations can influence international relations and diplomatic appointments.
