Political activist and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has called on the United States government to suspend intelligence sharing and security cooperation with Nigeria over recent comments attributed to Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi regarding banditry and terrorism.

Frank made the call in a statement issued in Abuja, expressing concern over remarks credited to Gumi suggesting that Nigerian authorities may know the identities and locations of bandits operating across parts of the country.

According to Frank, if government agencies indeed possess such intelligence, Nigerians deserve an explanation as to why decisive action has not been taken against the criminal groups responsible for widespread violence and kidnappings.

He noted that insecurity has continued to escalate in several regions despite assurances from government officials that security agencies have actionable intelligence about the perpetrators. Frank argued that the persistence of kidnappings and killings has raised serious concerns among citizens about the effectiveness of current security strategies.

The former APC chieftain therefore urged the administration of the U.S. President Donald Trump to exercise caution in its dealings with Nigeria, particularly in matters relating to intelligence sharing and security assistance.

“I am calling on the United States government to be very careful in its dealings with the current Nigerian administration. The U.S. should suspend intelligence sharing and security cooperation with the Nigerian government and its security chiefs,” Frank said.

Frank also expressed concern that despite security support and military assistance from the United States and other international partners, Nigerian troops continue to suffer casualties in ongoing operations against insurgents and bandits.
