‘Political Power Is Not Licence to Intimidate’ – NDC Candidate Condemns Attack on Obi’s Convoy

The Kogi East Senatorial candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Ameh, has condemned the reported attack and roadblock involving the convoy of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Benue State.

Ameh described the incident as “ridiculous and unacceptable,” warning against the use of political influence to intimidate opposition politicians and obstruct citizens from exercising their constitutional rights.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ameh said no Nigerian should be subjected to harassment, threats or unnecessary obstruction while travelling on a public road.

“Our roads belong to the people, and political influence must never be used to create fear, inconvenience, or a sense of lawlessness,” he said.

The NDC candidate argued that the reported incident raised serious concerns about the protection of fundamental rights guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution, particularly freedom of movement and freedom of association.

He cited Section 41(1) of the Constitution, which guarantees the right of Nigerian citizens to move freely throughout the country, as well as Section 40, which provides for the right to assemble freely and associate with others, including through political parties.

Ameh said any allegation that individuals connected to the state government were behind the incident should be thoroughly investigated.

“If these actions were indeed sponsored or encouraged by anyone connected to the state government, then that is deeply troubling and must be thoroughly investigated,” he said.

He stressed that public office should be viewed as a responsibility rather than a tool for suppressing political opposition.

“Public office is a responsibility, not a licence to intimidate citizens or empower thugs,” Ameh added.

The Kogi East senatorial candidate called on the Benue State Government to publicly condemn the incident and ensure that Obi’s visit to the state proceeds without further interference.

He also urged security agencies and other relevant authorities to conduct a transparent investigation and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable, irrespective of political affiliation.

“We must continue to speak up for peace, accountability, and the rule of law. Benue deserves leadership that protects its people and respects our constitutional rights, not actions that harass, intimidate, or humiliate our citizens,” Ameh said.

He specifically urged the authorities to investigate any alleged links to individuals with connections to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
