Nigeria, Cyprus Move to Deepen Ties as Ambassador Ufochukwu Presents Credentials
Nigeria and Cyprus have expressed renewed commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, with Nigeria’s Ambassador to Israel, with concurrent accreditation to Cyprus, Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu, formally presenting her Letters of Credence to Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.
The ceremony took place on Friday at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, Cyprus, marking the official commencement of Ufochukwu’s diplomatic assignment to the Mediterranean island nation.
During the ceremony, the Nigerian ambassador conveyed the greetings of President Bola Tinubu to Christodoulides and expressed her commitment to deepening relations between the two countries throughout her tenure.
The presentation of the Letters of Credence formally accredits Ufochukwu to represent Nigeria in Cyprus and serve as an official channel of communication between the governments in Abuja and Nicosia.
In his remarks, Christodoulides welcomed the Nigerian envoy and reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between the two countries, citing their shared historical experiences, common principles and enduring people-to-people connections.
He acknowledged Nigeria’s strategic importance in West Africa and across the African continent, particularly its contributions to regional dialogue, cooperation, integration and stability.
The Cypriot president also expressed his government’s readiness to work closely with Nigeria to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
According to him, priority areas include economic relations, trade and investment, education, and political dialogue, alongside efforts to address shared challenges through bilateral and multilateral engagements.
The renewed commitment signals an opportunity for both countries to expa
nd cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic relations and explore partnerships that could deliver economic and social benefits.
For Nigeria, Ufochukwu’s accreditation represents an opportunity to strengthen the country’s diplomatic engagement in the Mediterranean region, particularly in trade, education, investment and the welfare of Nigerians living in Cyprus.
The development could also create avenues for Nigerian businesses, students and professionals to explore opportunities in Cyprus, while encouraging greater Cypriot investment and commercial engagement in Nigeria.
The ceremony was attended by senior Cypriot government officials and members of the Nigerian diplomatic mission.
Ufochukwu is expected to begin engagements with Cypriot government officials, business leaders and members of the Nigerian community as she works to translate the renewed diplomatic goodwill into practical outcomes.
Her presentation of credentials marks the formal beginning of her assignment in Cyprus, with both countries expressing interest in building stronger relations founded on mutual respect, friendship and shared interests.
