Nigeria Moves to Deepen Lebanon Ties as Wasa Presents Credentials to President Aoun

Nigeria has renewed efforts to strengthen its diplomatic relationship with Lebanon following the formal presentation of Letters of Credence by Ambassador-designate Segun Ige Wasa to Lebanese President, General Joseph Aoun.

Wasa presented his credentials on Thursday, September 3, 2026, formally commencing his diplomatic assignment in Lebanon and setting the stage for a fresh phase of bilateral engagement between Abuja and Beirut.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday, September 8, by the spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, in Abuja.

During the ceremony, Wasa conveyed the greetings and best wishes of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to President Aoun, the Lebanese government and the people of Lebanon.

The Nigerian ambassador-designate reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Lebanon, with emphasis on expanding cooperation for the mutual benefit of both countries.

Wasa stressed the importance of stronger people-to-people relations, noting that increased interaction between Nigerians and Lebanese could promote mutual understanding, friendship and broader cooperation.

He also expressed Nigeria’s readiness to work closely with the Lebanese government to identify new areas of bilateral engagement and build on existing relations.

According to him, his diplomatic assignment would focus on promoting closer interaction between the two countries and supporting initiatives capable of deepening their longstanding bonds of friendship.

The Federal Government, meanwhile, reiterated its commitment to maintaining active and constructive diplomatic relations with Lebanon.
It said Nigeria would continue to collaborate with the Lebanese authorities to consolidate existing ties while exploring opportunities to expand bilateral cooperation across areas of mutual interest.
