Iran War: Red Cross Warns of Looming Medical Crisis as Death Toll Climbs

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has raised alarm over a rapidly worsening humanitarian situation in Iran, warning that critical medical supplies could soon be exhausted if the ongoing conflict persists.

According to the agency, emergency healthcare needs are rising at an exponential rate, with trauma kits and other essential medical equipment at risk of running out. The IFRC remains the only humanitarian organisation currently operating across the country.

Since the onset of U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on February 28, more than 1,900 people have reportedly been killed, while over 21,000 others have sustained injuries. However, other independent estimates suggest the toll could be significantly higher.

Speaking to Reuters, the head of the IFRC delegation in Iran, Maria Martinez, disclosed that the crisis has also claimed the lives of aid workers. She confirmed that three IFRC personnel have died in the line of duty, including one who was killed during a March 31 airstrike that struck a medical clinic in Zanjan province. She did not assign responsibility for the incident.

“Our concern is really how the humanitarian needs are escalating so rapidly and our ability to bring all the support into the country,” Martinez said, noting a growing atmosphere of fear among civilians.

Meanwhile, hopes for a quick resolution to the conflict continue to fade after Donald Trump pledged to intensify military operations, signaling the likelihood of further escalation in the coming days.
