Merz Meets Trump at White House Amid Rising Global Tensions

The Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, is currently holding talks with former U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, in what observers describe as a significant moment for transatlantic relations.

The meeting, taking place in Washington, comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions and ongoing debates over security cooperation, trade policies, and the future of NATO alliances. While full details of the agenda have not yet been officially released, diplomatic sources suggest discussions are centred on European security, Middle East developments, and economic partnerships between Germany and the United States.

Merz’s visit signals Berlin’s intention to maintain strong ties with Washington at a time when global stability remains fragile. Analysts note that Germany’s leadership has been increasingly vocal on issues of defence spending, Ukraine support, and strategic autonomy within the European Union.

Trump, who remains a dominant figure in the U.S. politics has previously criticized European allies over defence contributions and trade imbalances. Today’s engagement is, therefore, being closely watched for signals about the future direction of U.S.–German relations.

Further updates are expected following a joint appearance or official statement from both leaders.

US-Israeli Airstrikes Reportedly Kill Iran’s Acting Defence Minister Hours After Appointment

Iran’s newly appointed acting Defence Minister, Seyed Majid Eb Al-Reza, has reportedly been killed in fresh U.S.-Israeli airstrikes, less than 48 hours after assuming office.

According to emerging reports on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, Al-Reza was targeted in strikes carried out in Tehran. Iranian authorities have yet to issue a detailed official statement confirming the circumstances of his death, but multiple sources indicate he was among the latest high-profile casualties in the escalating conflict.

Al-Reza was appointed on March 2, 2026, by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian as interim defence minister. His appointment followed the killing of his predecessor, Aziz Nasirzadeh, who died in earlier U.S.-Israeli strikes on February 28.

Those earlier attacks also reportedly claimed the lives of senior Iranian figures, including Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Mohammad Pakpour, Army Chief Abdol Rahim Mousavi, and Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

If confirmed, the killing of two successive defence ministers within days would mark an unprecedented blow to Iran’s military leadership and signal a dramatic intensification of hostilities between Tehran and the U.S.-Israel alliance.

The reported strikes come amid widening regional tensions, with both sides trading accusations over targeted attacks on strategic installations and leadership structures.

Analysts warn that the continued decapitation of Iran’s top command could provoke further retaliation and deepen instability across the Middle East.

Israeli Forces Conduct Overnight Air Strikes on Iran’s Presidential Office and Security Council in Tehran

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Tuesday that its air force carried out precision air strikes overnight in the heart of Tehran, targeting key components of Iran’s government and security apparatus.

In an official statement, the IDF said munitions were dropped on Iran’s Presidential Office and the Supreme National Security Council building, structures regarded as central to the Islamic Republic’s leadership and strategic command.

The strikes are part of what Israel describes as a broader military campaign against Iran’s regime, marking a significant escalation in hostilities between the two countries. According to the military, the targeted “leadership complex” is where senior officials regularly convene on matters of national security and defence.

The IDF statement also said it struck other parts of the compound used by Iran’s security decision-making bodies and facilities for training senior Iranian military officers.

The Israeli military’s announcement follows days of heightened tensions after earlier U.S.–Israeli operations in Iran that reportedly killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei; a move that triggered regional condemnation and retaliation from Iranian forces.

Iranian authorities have not yet publicly confirmed details of the latest strikes, including casualties or the extent of infrastructure damage. Analysts warn that the strikes could further destabilize an already volatile region, with potential repercussions for global security and energy markets.

As of this writing, diplomatic responses from Tehran and other world capitals continue to unfold, with international observers urging restraint amid fears of broader escalation.

President Donald Trump, has announced on his personal X account that he has accepted an invitation to be the honoree at this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.

In the post, Trump said the association “very nicely” asked him to serve as this year’s featured guest at the annual event a ceremony and dinner with a long history dating back to 1924, when it was first held under then President Calvin Coolidge.

Marking the United States’ upcoming 250th anniversary, Trump said he is accepting the honor and pledged to help make the event the “GREATEST, HOTTEST, and MOST SPECTACULAR DINNER, OF ANY KIND, EVER!” according to his statement.

The president also acknowledged his previous absence from the dinner during his earlier tenure, saying he boycotted it because of what he described as “extraordinarily bad” press coverage and “FAKE NEWS” throughout his first term.

“However, I look forward to being with everyone this year,” Trump wrote, adding that he hopes the event will be “something very special.”

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner traditionally brings together journalists, government officials and public figures to celebrate press freedoms and recognize reporting achievements, often featuring comedic speeches and high-profile attendees.
