Navy Arrests Osun APC Assembly Candidate Babatunde Komolafe Festus and Others With Rifle

The Nigerian Navy has arrested the All Progressives Congress House of Assembly candidate for Atakumosa East/West Local Government Area, Hon. Babatunde Komolafe Festus, alongside several supporters over alleged unlawful possession of a firearm.

The arrest occurred on Thursday in Ifewara, Osun State, while Komolafe was travelling in an APC campaign vehicle linked to the party’s governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.

According to sources, the arrest followed a routine search by naval personnel, during which a rifle was allegedly discovered inside the vehicle.

“He was arrested today after a routine search by Navy officials exposed him and other supporters with a gun,” a source was quoted as saying.

A video circulating online showed Navy personnel parading the apprehended individuals, with Komolafe seen kneeling alongside other suspects.

The reported arrest comes about 48 hours before the Osun State governorship election scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026, amid heightened political tension and growing concerns over possible violence during the poll.

There has been no immediate official statement from the Nigerian Navy detailing the circumstances of the arrest or confirming ownership of the alleged firearm.

Sources also claim that the naval commander who ordered the arrest has been redeployed, and the politician has been released following “orders from above”.

These developments have intensified scrutiny of political activities and security arrangements ahead of Saturday’s election.
