The internal crisis rocking the New Nigerian Peoples Party has further deepened as a Kano State High Court has affirmed the suspension of its state chairman, Honorable Hashimu Suleiman Dungurawa. The court also restrained him from parading himself as the Chairman of the NNPP in Kano pending the final determination of the suit.

The ruling was delivered by Justice Zuwaira Yusuf of State High Court 13 on Friday following a motion exparte dated December 30th, 2025. The motion was filed by Shuaibu Hassan and nine others, who are members of the Gargari ward in Dawakin-Tofa Local Government Area, against Hon. Hashimu Suleiman Dungurawa and the NNPP.

The plaintiffs had sought the court to uphold the disciplinary processes and subsequent suspension of Dungurawa from the party. The allegations against him include denigrating the office and person of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, creating division within the party, and failure to pay party dues. Through their lawyers, K. Njidda Esq and S. A. Muhammad Esq, the plaintiffs also moved an originating summon seeking the court to determine whether the action against Dungurawa was in accordance with the provisions of the NNPP’s constitution.

Granting the interlocutory injunction, Justice Yusuf stated, “AN ORDER that the suspension of the 1st respondent on the 30th December, 2025 shall be maintained pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.” The judge added, “The applicants are hereby ordered that the process be served on the respondents.” The court further ordered all parties to maintain the status quo ante as it was after December 30th, 2025. The case, with suit number KN/1218/2026, has been adjourned to January 19th, 2026 for hearing on the substantive motion.

Justice Yusuf elaborated, “Dungurawa is restrained from parading himself as Chairman following his suspension from his ward pending hearing of the substantive motion.”

In a related development, the State Executive Council of the NNPP has affirmed the nomination of Honorable Abdullahi Zubairu Abiya as the new Acting State Chairman of the party in Kano State. This decision follows the suspension of the former State Chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa.

The appointment was endorsed by the NNPP State Executive Committee during an emergency meeting held at the party’s secretariat in Kano. The decision was announced by Barrister Yusuf Mukhtar, the Assistant Legal Adviser of the party. He said, “Abiya’s appointment was in line with the provisions of the NNPP constitution.”
