A joint military operation in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State turned deadly on Friday, September 19, leaving more than ten security personnel feared dead and several others missing. The incident occurred around the Agu Center axis of Mbatula–Mberev Ward, near the Taraba border.

Chairman of Katsina-Ala Council, Shaku Justine, said the troops were attacked by a coalition of local militias, Fulani marauders, and alleged hired fighters from Taraba. “The troops came under heavy fire from a coalition of local militias, Fulani marauders, and alleged hired fighters from Taraba,” Shaku Justine stated.

A senior officer, Danzuru, was reportedly captured alive during the clash. Two Hilux vehicles were burnt, and several motorcycles were taken away. Sources indicate three of the hired fighters aligned with the militias were killed by the joint forces.

Militia leaders from the Shitile clan, including Konyo, Anyogo, Officer Mathew Zegebra, Gulenen Ashaver, and Fullfire, were among those leading the assault. Only two bodies of slain officers have been recovered so far, with search teams continuing to comb the bushes for others still missing.

Benue State Commissioner of Police, Emenari Ifeanyi, is at the scene with Council Chairman Shaku Justine, confirming reinforcements have been deployed and recovery operations are ongoing. Shaku Justine said efforts are underway to address the situation.
