FORMER MILITARY LEADER IBB HAILS TINUBU AS ‘UNCOMMON PERSONALITY’ ON 73RD BIRTHDAY

Former Nigerian military leader Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as an “uncommon personality” in a birthday message marking the latter’s 73rd birthday. In a statement personally signed by Babangida, he commended Tinubu’s leadership and urged him to remain courageous, fair, and just in addressing Nigeria’s challenges. Babangida praised Tinubu’s commitment to democratic values and his role in the struggle for the “emancipation of the ordinary Nigerian,” stating, “With your rich background in deepening democratic values, your history speaks for your person.” He acknowledged the difficulties of leading Nigeria, emphasizing that Tinubu’s “bold, resilient, and encouraging” interventions have been remarkable amid the nation’s current trials. “Only those who have been there know exactly the grit required to lead Nigeria and Nigerians,” Babangida wrote, recalling their collaboration in the late 1980s during his own administration’s efforts to transition to democracy. He highlighted Tinubu’s consistency in upholding democratic ideals, which he said earned him Nigerians’ trust. Babangida expressed solidarity with Tinubu, noting, “Even though the challenges facing us as a nation may be daunting, you have shown equal commitment to contend with the realities that stare us in the face.” He lauded the President’s policy innovations and urged him not to relent: “You must not be tired or discouraged in providing the desired leadership to move the country forward.” The former military leader concluded by joining millions of Nigerians in celebrating Tinubu, adding, “At a time like this, when your birthday strikes the right chord, it is gratifying to celebrate you with a pat on the back.” The message reinforced confidence in Tinubu’s capacity to navigate Nigeria’s complexities while calling for sustained focus on national progress.

The statement included the President’s personal reflection: “I remain grateful for Allah’s mercy and the honor of serving Nigeria. This birthday renews my hope that through prayer and perseverance, we shall overcome every challenge.” Onanuga emphasized the administration’s continued focus on economic reforms, security enhancement and national unity.
