PRESIDENT TINUBU FELICITATES WITH VANGUARD PUBLISHER, SAM AMUKA-PEMU, AT 90
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, the iconic journalist and publisher of Vanguard newspaper, on his 90th birthday. In a statement released on June 13, 2025, Tinubu hailed Amuka-Pemu as an eminent statesman and journalism icon, describing him as a shining example of dedication, resilience, and integrity within the media industry. According to Tinubu, Amuka-Pemu’s leadership in journalism has not only influenced the media landscape but also extended to his role as a respected leader in Delta State and the South-South geopolitical zone. “Today, he is not just a leader of the profession; he is a doyen,” the President stated. The President recalled Amuka-Pemu’s illustrious career, which began at the Daily Times, followed by his co-founding of The Punch with the late Chief Olu Aboderin, and later establishing Vanguard newspaper in 1984. Under Amuka-Pemu’s leadership, Vanguard became one of Nigeria’s most influential newspapers. Tinubu commended Amuka-Pemu’s managerial acumen, which has kept Vanguard alive 41 years after its founding despite the challenges in the media industry. “It is to his credit and managerial acumen that Vanguard is alive today, 41 years after its founding, despite the crisis in the media industry,” he said. The President also highlighted his recent recognition of Amuka-Pemu’s contributions, where he conferred the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) on him on Democracy Day. “On the occasion of this year’s Democracy Day, I conferred on him the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in profound recognition of his significant contributions to the country and his exemplary leadership in the field of journalism,” Tinubu stated. Tinubu urged younger journalists to emulate Amuka-Pemu’s exemplary leadership and wished him continued God’s grace and more years of impact. “I urge the younger journalists to emulate this highly respected publisher and leader. I wish Uncle Sam continued God’s grace and more years of impact. Our country is deeply grateful for his invaluable contributions to journalism and his enduring legacy,” he concluded.
