GUNMEN ATTACK FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC OKO, KILL FOUR STUDENTS, ABDUCT TWO LECTURERS

Gunmen launched a deadly attack on the Federal Polytechnic Oko in Anambra State, killing at least four students and abducting two lecturers. The incident occurred on Thursday night, with eyewitnesses describing the attackers as arriving in two vehicles and opening fire indiscriminately at a drinking spot and hostels. According to reports, about seven persons, mostly students, were shot at different locations, with some victims shot at a drinking spot along Tipper Road and others at various hostels. “The gunmen attacked Total Area, Victoria Point Drinking Joint and then some hostels. We heard there was another group operating on bike. Probably they were the ones moving round shooting at people,” a source said. The identity of the abducted lecturers is yet to be confirmed, while the actual number of students killed or wounded is still unknown. A staff member of the polytechnic said, “The only thing we are sure of is that some gunmen invaded some neighborhoods around the polytechnic and attacked people. We don’t have details of that yet.” The Anambra State Police Command has taken over the crime scene and is making efforts to arrest the perpetrators. According to the police, two fatalities were recorded, and two persons were abducted. The Command’s Spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, said, “The Police Operatives led by the Area Commander Aguata, complemented by the Joint Security Force comprising the Army, Navy, Civil Defence and Vigilante Operatives have taken over the scene of an alleged cult-related shooting.” Ikenga appealed for calm, assuring that operatives were “already acting on some clues from the scene and leveraging on necessary information from some eyewitnesses for the possible arrest of the hoodlums.” The motive behind the attack is suspected to be cult-related, with the police investigating the incident.

FORMER NIGERIAN ARMY CHIEF LT. GEN. BURATAI NARROWLY ESCAPES DEATH IN BOKO HARAM ATTACK

A recent attack in Borno State has put Nigeria’s security situation in the spotlight once again. Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, narrowly escaped death when his convoy was ambushed by suspected Boko Haram insurgents near a military base. The attackers targeted high-value equipment, including armored vehicles and tanks, some of which were destroyed or stolen. Buratai served as Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff from 2015 to 2021 and was a central figure in the country’s counterinsurgency campaign. Since his retirement, he has remained an influential figure in security circles. This incident highlights the growing concerns about the country’s security landscape. Lawmaker representing Borno South, Senator Ali Ndume described the situation as a “full-blown crisis,” with insurgents moving freely and attacking military personnel and equipment. The threat from groups like Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa is significant, and Nigeria is considered one of the countries with the highest terrorism threat levels globally. The attackers reportedly targeted high-value equipment, including Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles (MRAPVs), tanks, and machine guns. In some cases, the insurgents not only destroy these assets but also cart away weaponry and equipment. The security challenges in Nigeria are not limited to the North-East region. According to Senator Ndume, all six geopolitical zones are experiencing security issues, including violent conflict, banditry, and economic sabotage like oil theft. The South-West region appears to be the only relatively safe area. The attack on Buratai has sparked renewed calls for a more effective approach to addressing Nigeria’s security problems.

RUSSIA LAUNCHES AERIAL ASSAULT ON KYIV DAYS AFTER UKRAINE’S AUDACIOUS DRONE ATTACK ON BOMBER FLEET

Russia launched a massive aerial assault on Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital city, in the early hours of Friday, June 6, 2025. The attack, which included drones and ballistic missiles, targeted multiple locations across the city, causing widespread damage and injuring at least three people. According to Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko, fires broke out in several districts, including Holosiivskyi and Darnytskyi, as a result of the attack. Ukrainian air defense units were activated in the Obolon area to mitigate the damage. “The attack on the capital continues. Stay in shelters!” Klitschko urged residents. The Head of Kyiv City Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, accused Russia of deliberately targeting residential areas, saying a high-rise building in the Solomyansky district was damaged. A CNN producer in the Kyiv region reported hearing at least two explosions. The attack comes days after Ukraine’s security service launched a daring drone attack on Russian airfields, striking multiple military aircraft, including nuclear-capable heavy bombers. Ukraine also attacked the Kerch Bridge, the only direct connection point between Russia and the annexed Crimean Peninsula, with 1,100 kilograms of explosives planted underwater. Russian President Vladimir Putin had promised to respond to the Ukrainian attacks in a phone call with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday. Trump’s account of the call did not indicate that he pressured Putin to temper his response or end the invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine’s air defenses are struggling to cope with the increased frequency and intensity of Russian attacks, which have been made possible by Russia’s expanded drone and missile production. The US has signaled that it expects European allies to take on more responsibility for protecting Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Pentagon has diverted critical anti-drone technology allocated for Ukraine to US Air Force units in the Middle East.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER FLAMETHROWER ATTACK ON PRO-ISRAEL GROUP IN COLORADO INJURES 8

A man wielding a makeshift flamethrower attacked a group advocating for Israeli hostages in Gaza on Sunday, injuring eight people with burns, some serious. Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, was arrested and booked into the Boulder County jail. The FBI is investigating the incident as a terrorist act. According to eyewitnesses, Soliman yelled “Free Palestine” before hurling an incendiary device into the group gathered at Pearl Street pedestrian mall in Boulder, Colorado. “He’s right there. He’s throwing Molotov cocktails,” a witness shouted as a police officer advanced on the suspect. The victims, aged 52 to 88, were rushed to the hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack, stating, “This attack was aimed against peaceful people who wished to express their solidarity with the hostages held by Hamas, simply because they were Jews.” FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino described the incident as an “act of ideologically motivated violence.” “We will speak clearly on these incidents when the facts warrant it,” he added. The attack occurred amid heightened tensions following Israel’s war in Gaza, which began with Hamas-led militants killing 1,200 people and abducting 250 others on October 7, 2023. Israel’s military campaign has resulted in over 54,000 deaths in Gaza, mostly women and children. Lynn Segal, 72, a witness who supported the Palestinian cause, described the scene as chaotic. “There were people who were burning, I wanted to help,” she said. “But I didn’t want to be associated with the perpetrator.” The New York Police Department has increased its presence at religious sites in response to the attack. Mark Michalek, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Denver field office, noted that such attacks are becoming increasingly common. “Sadly, attacks like this are becoming too common across the country,” he said. “This is an example of how perpetrators of violence continue to threaten communities across the nation.”

ISRAEL VOWS TO RETALIATE AFTER HOUTHI MISSILE STRIKES AIRPORT

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to retaliate against the Houthis after a missile fired by the group struck the grounds of Israel’s main airport. In a video posted on social media, Netanyahu threatened strikes against the group, saying, “We attacked in the past, we will attack in the future.” The missile, fired from Yemen by the Iran-backed group, landed near the main terminal of Ben Gurion airport on Sunday morning, Israeli authorities said. Four people were injured by the blast, with another two injured on their way to a shelter. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a televised statement that the Israeli airport was “no longer safe for air travel.” Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, said, “Anyone who hits us, we will hit them seven times stronger.” Netanyahu added that “attacks by the Houthis emanate from Iran,” and Israel would respond to the Houthi attack “at a time and place of our choosing” to Iran. The airport has now reopened to flights, after temporarily halting them, though several major airlines cancelled Sunday’s flights to and from the airport. Senior Israeli police commander Yair Hetzroni showed journalists a crater caused by the impact of the missile, saying, “You can see the scene right behind us here, a hole that opened up with a diameter of tens of metres and also tens of metres deep.” Netanyahu is set to meet ministers and defence officials on Sunday to discuss a response. The Houthis have regularly launched missile attacks at Israel in solidarity with Hamas in Gaza, but it is rare for one to make it through Israel’s sophisticated air defences. The group has also been carrying out attacks on ships in the Red Sea, which the US has responded to by leading a bombing campaign against it.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s family home in Obeiba-Ihima, Kogi State, was attacked by gunmen on Tuesday, April 15. The attackers, who mistakenly believed the Senator was present, vandalized windows in her grandfather’s house. Fortunately, security operatives swiftly responded and repelled the attackers. According to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, the incident occurred when her younger brother took contractors to inspect locations for upcoming projects in her senatorial district. “The unknown gunmen assumed I was the one in town and attacked my family house that night.
