NIGER STATE GOVERNOR ADJUSTS CURFEW TIME IN MINNA

The Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has reviewed the curfew time in Minna metropolis, adjusting it from its previous time to 8 o’clock in the night to 6 o’clock in the morning, effective immediately. Chief Press Secretary Bologi Ibrahim, in a statement, said the adjustment was attributed to a security update received from the State security committee. Bologi Ibrahim quoted the Governor as saying that his administration will continue to engage the security committee on the outcome of the curfew for further adjustment where necessary. Bologi Ibrahim further noted that Governor Bago encouraged the people to continue to be law-abiding citizens as his administration is determined to implement policies that will impact positively on them and ensure their wellbeing. Bago’s administration has been working closely with the security committee to ensure the safety of citizens, and Bologi Ibrahim added that the Governor will continue to review and adjust policies as necessary. Bago’s commitment to the wellbeing of citizens is evident in his efforts to balance security measures with the needs of the people. Bologi Ibrahim concluded by stating that Bago’s administration is focused on implementing policies that will have a positive impact on the lives of citizens.

CIVIL SOCIETY GROUP DEFENDS GOVERNOR MOHAMMED BAGO OVER CONTROVERSIAL DIRECTIVE

The Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Peace, Security, Good Governance, Equity, and Justice has come out in defense of Governor Mohammed Bago’s directive to the police to arrest individuals with dreadlocks in Niger State. The group expressed strong disagreement with an article titled “Mohammed Bago’s Misplaced Priority” published in This Day newspaper, saying the article failed to acknowledge the governor’s significant achievements and well-meaning initiatives. According to the group, Governor Bago’s directive stems from his patriotic duty to address the rising wave of insecurity and criminality in Niger State. The group’s National Coordinator, Comrade James Okoronkwo, stated that the initiative demonstrates the governor’s commitment to ensuring public safety and security. The civil society group also highlighted Governor Bago’s achievements in various sectors, including agriculture and aviation. They noted that his initiatives to boost food production, enhance farmers’ welfare, and promote agricultural development have yielded positive results. Additionally, the reactivation of the Abandoned Minna International Airport was cited as a notable achievement, showcasing his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development and economic growth. “We urge the media to adopt a balanced approach, recognizing both challenges and successes,” Okoronkwo said. The group believes that Governor Bago’s dedication to the holistic development of Niger State should be acknowledged and appreciated.

IGP COMMISERATES WITH NIGER STATE GOVERNMENT OVER TANKER EXPLOSION

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Niger State following the tragic tanker explosion that occurred on January 18, 2025, at Dikko Junction, Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, Niger State. In a statement, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the IGP emphasized the importance of strict adherence to safety protocols on the roads, warning against negligence and disregard for regulations that can lead to such catastrophic incidents. “The IGP, while emphasizing the importance of strict adherence to safety protocols on our roads, warns firmly against the negligence and disregard for regulations that can lead to such catastrophic incidents,” Adejobi stated. The IGP directed all State Commissioners of Police to strengthen their Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) to ensure strict compliance and enforcement of established protocols and traffic regulations on highways. Adejobi noted that the IGP further charged vehicle owners and drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and abide by traffic rules to prevent tragedies. Olumuyiwa Adejobi stated that the IGP prayed for the souls of the departed and called on stakeholders, including transport operators and the general public, to prioritize safety and responsibility in their operations and actions. The tanker explosion resulted in the loss of over 73 lives, numerous injuries, and destruction of several shops and property. The IGP’s directive is aimed at preventing such incidents in the future.

TANKER EXPLOSION CLAIMS MULTIPLE LIVES IN NIGER STATE

A devastating tanker explosion occurred at Dikko junction, near the Abuja-Kaduna expressway, leaving scores of people burnt to death and several others injured. According to eyewitnesses, a petrol tanker exploded after some residents attempted to scoop its contents, resulting in a tragic loss of life. Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, expressed shock and sadness over the incident, describing it as “worrisome, heartbreaking, and unfortunate.” The governor sympathized with the families of the victims, praying that Allah would grant them solace and healing. Governor Bago cautioned the public to prioritize their safety and be responsible, especially in situations involving hazardous materials. He directed relevant authorities to take necessary actions and ensure security in the area. Reports indicate that the tanker exploded after it fell and spilled its contents on the road. Despite the exact number of casualties being unclear, sources suggest that at least 60 people were burnt to death.
