FEDERAL GOVERNMENT COMMENCES FREE CESAREAN SECTION INITIATIVE FOR POOR AND VULNERABLE WOMEN
The Federal Government’s initiative to provide free cesarean sections for poor and vulnerable women across the country has commenced at the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi. According to the Medical Director, Dr. Yahaya Baba Adamu, the initiative, tagged “Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII),” aims to ensure that poor and vulnerable women do not die in labor due to lack of financial capacity to pay for health services. “Neither will the product of their delivery be allowed to die because their parents don’t have money. So that’s why the federal government came up with this initiative,” Dr. Adamu said. He confirmed that the initiative has already commenced at the medical centre, with at least 12 pregnant women benefiting from the federal government’s gesture last week. Dr. Adamu emphasized that the initiative is open to all Nigerian women who need the service, regardless of their registration status with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). “The funding is only channelled through the NHIA. You don’t have to be a registered beneficiary of NHIA to benefit. So every Nigerian woman who needs the service for the virtue of being vulnerable is qualified,” he said. The Medical Director appealed to the media to support the medical centre and the federal government in amplifying the initiative to reach more vulnerable women. He also expressed hope that the Nasarawa state Health Management Board would soon approach the federal government to seek inclusion into the initiative, capturing more medical centres in the state and benefiting more vulnerable women.
