NIGERIAN ARMY COMMENDS FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ON MASS METERING INITIATIVE IN BARRACKS

The Nigerian Army has commended the Federal Government and De-Haryor Global Services for their efforts in implementing a nationwide mass metering initiative across military barracks in Nigeria. The project, inaugurated by Power Minister Chief Adebayo Adelabu in March 2023, aims to improve electricity accountability and management in barracks. Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. O.O. Oluyede, praised the progress of Phase One, noting “improved hours of power supply” and positive impacts on energy management in beneficiary barracks. The phase covers installations in Lagos, Enugu, and select Abuja barracks. De-Haryor CEO Engr. Ashade Olatunbosun acknowledged initial financial hurdles but reported “considerable momentum” with thousands of smart meters installed to boost transparency, billing accuracy, and energy efficiency. The project has generated ₦769.1 million in revenue between August 2024 and April 2025. “This marks a milestone in modernizing Nigeria’s energy infrastructure, particularly within public institutions,” Olatunbosun stated, reaffirming commitment to partnerships that drive sustainable growth and accountability. The initiative aims to eliminate clashes between military institutions and service providers, and pervasive mistrust associated with estimated billing. The sophisticated smart metering technology deployed makes it extremely difficult for end-users to bypass the meters, and customers and service providers can conveniently monitor energy consumption. The technology also enables customers to vend their meters remotely using their telephones or laptops.

PANDEF COMMENDS HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES FOR OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE ON RIVERS STATE EMERGENCY

The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has commended the House of Representatives for constituting and inaugurating the Adhoc Committee to provide oversight on the current State of Emergency in Rivers State. In a statement, National Chairman of PANDEF, Ambassador Godknows B. Igali, expressed profound appreciation to the leadership of the 10th House of Representatives, particularly Honourable Speaker Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, for the courage and foresight in setting up the committee. Igali said the decision to offer impartial and dispassionate oversight in Rivers State has been resoundingly applauded by patriotic Nigerians across the country. “It is especially heartening that the Chairmanship of the Committee was entrusted to Professor Julius Ihonvbere—a globally respected scholar, accomplished public servant, and principled politician whose integrity and character are widely acknowledged,” Igali added. PANDEF has consistently opposed the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, which it believes does not align with the constitutional criteria for such a measure. Igali emphasized that the appointment of the Administrator is not only a constitutional aberration but also a serious dent on Nigeria’s democratic image and its standing within the international community. Igali is calling on the Adhoc Committee to seize the opportunity to etch their names in gold by providing effective oversight of the Administrator’s actions and reversing some of the unlawful measures he has undertaken since assuming office. “The Administrator’s pattern of governance has included the appointment of Sole Administrators for Local Government Councils, heads of government agencies, and more recently, ministries due process and democratic norms,” Igali noted. The PANDEF National Chairman urged the Committee to actively facilitate a political resolution in Rivers State, pursued with urgency, diligence, and an unwavering sense of neutrality. “The restoration of democracy in the state, most importantly through the reinstatement of its duly elected governor, is a mission of national importance – one that must be accomplished without delay,” Igali stressed.

NIGERIA COMMENDS ISRAEL-HAMAS CEASEFIRE AGREEMENT

The Federal Government of Nigeria has welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, expressing optimism that the deal will bring an end to the widespread civilian suffering in Gaza. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria commended the efforts of Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, whose tireless negotiations ensured the success of the ceasefire. “The Federal Government of Nigeria welcomes the agreement of a ceasefire in Gaza between Israel and Hamas,” the statement read in part. “Nigeria also welcomes the supply of much-needed aid and relief materials that the peace deal facilitates.” Nigeria urged all stakeholders to maintain the momentum of peace and ensure the successful execution of subsequent phases of the agreement. The government also reiterated its commitment to a two-state solution as the pathway to lasting peace in the region. The ceasefire agreement, reached after 15 months of conflict, provides relief for families of Israeli hostages held in Gaza and Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons. Nigeria expressed optimism that the deal would halt the tragic loss of civilian lives and provide relief to affected families. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, signed the press release, which emphasized the importance of sustaining progress and prioritizing the implementation of the remaining phases of the agreement.
