A car plowed into a group of demonstrators in Munich, Germany, injuring at least 28 people, including children, in what local officials suspect was an intentional attack. The incident occurred on Thursday, just before world leaders were set to arrive in the city for a high-level security conference. According to Munich police director Christian Huber, the suspect is a 24-year-old asylum-seeker from Afghanistan. Bavarian governor Markus Söder stated that the incident “is suspected to be an attack.” Police spokesperson Thomas Schelshorn said that authorities will investigate the suspect’s asylum application status and motive for the attack. “What motive the perpetrator had, to drive into this crowd with a vehicle, has to be now found out,” Schelshorn said. The incident has raised concerns about immigration and security, particularly during Germany’s election campaign. Authorities have launched a major operation near the city’s central train station, and the driver is currently in custody, with police deeming him no longer a threat. Munich’s mayor, Dieter Reiter, confirmed that children were among those injured in the attack. The city is now reeling from the aftermath, with many left to wonder about the motives behind the attack.
