SDP BANISHES NASIR EL-RUFAI FOR 30 YEARS OVER ALLEGED MEMBERSHIP FALSEHOOD

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai from its membership and banned him from participating in the party’s activities for 30 years. In a statement, SDP National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, said the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) made the decision after thorough inquiry revealed that El-Rufai had not joined the SDP despite claiming to have done so. Aiyenigba said El-Rufai failed to register at his ward as required by law and instead forged his own documents and self-registered. “Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai devoted so much time to putting up false representation of membership by seeking photo opportunities with the suspended National Chairman Shehu Musa Gabam and some leaders of the SDP who assumed that he had joined the SDP in Kaduna State,” Aiyenigba said. The party accused El-Rufai of destabilizing the party and promoting the activities of other parties in Kaduna State. Aiyenigba said El-Rufai’s actions were contrary to the party’s constitution and principles. “The SDP is committed to national patriotism, party discipline, ideological clarity, moral rectitude, candour, honour, integrity, principled opposition, fair contest and internal democracy,” Aiyenigba said. The ban takes effect from July 28, 2025, and will last for 30 years, until July 28, 2055. The party has notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and relevant agencies of El-Rufai’s non-member status and non-eligibility for SDP membership. Aiyenigba reiterated that El-Rufai is not a member of the SDP and does not represent the party’s interests at any level.

COALITION IN CRISIS AS POLITICIANS SCHEME OVER 2027 PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATURE

A power play is brewing among top politicians in the coalition over the choice of presidential candidate for the 2027 election. Sources close to the matter reveal that some prominent politicians are considering withdrawing from the arrangement due to alleged underground operations by Atiku Abubakar’s camp, which may conflict with the wishes of others and potentially undermine the coalition’s purpose. According to insiders, Atiku’s camp is planning to adopt the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as its official party to run in 2027, after efforts to register the All Democratic Alliance (ADA) hit a snag. However, some politicians are reportedly scheming to hijack the SDP, prompting Peter Obi and Nasir El-Rufai to vow to pull out of any such move. “Atiku is part of the coalition, and they have several plans. If ADA didn’t work, they will settle for SDP, but Atiku’s camp is already playing smart games, which is annoying Peter Obi and El-Rufai’s camp, threatening to pull out,” a source disclosed. Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified that there are no shortcuts to registering a political party. Despite rumored interest in registering ADA, the party has yet to meet the necessary requirements, according to INEC National Commissioner Sam Olumekun. “INEC has received several letters of intent to register one political party or the other. However, not one has met the requirements needed to proceed to a formal registration application process,” Olumekun stated during an interactive session with journalists in Abuja. The development has led to finger-pointing among politicians within ADA, with some accusing INEC of obstructing the registration process. As the 2027 election approaches, the infighting within the coalition and challenges with party registration may have significant implications for Nigeria’s political landscape.

KADUNA GOVERNMENT REFUTES EL-RUFAI’S CLAIMS ON PROJECTS COMMISSIONED BY PRESIDENT TINUBU

The Kaduna State Government has strongly refuted claims made by former Governor Nasir El-Rufai that the projects recently commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his visit to the state were initiated by his administration. Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ibraheem Musa, described El-Rufai’s claims as “bare-faced lies” and “blatant distortion of the truth” in a statement. Ibraheem Musa said the three major projects commissioned by President Tinubu, including the Institutes of Vocational Training and Skills Development, the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Specialist Hospital, and 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Buses, were not initiated by El-Rufai’s administration. “The three Institutes of Vocational Training and Skills Development were fully initiated and completed by the administration of Governor Uba Sani,” Musa stated. The government emphasized that the institutes are pivotal to Governor Sani’s human capital development agenda, designed to equip Kaduna’s youth with practical, future-ready skills. Collectively, they are projected to graduate at least 36,000 youths annually. The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has certified these institutions as the best-equipped skills development centers in Nigeria, with NBTE Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris Bugaje, describing Kaduna State as the “hub of skills development in Nigeria”. Ibraheem Musa further explained that the 100 CNG Buses are another initiative of Governor Sani’s administration, launched to provide reliable and eco-friendly transportation while mitigating the impact of fuel subsidy removal. Workers, retirees, and students will enjoy free rides for the first six months, with substantially subsidized fares available to the general public thereafter. Regarding the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Specialist Hospital, the government clarified that the project was originally conceived during the administration of former Vice President Namadi Sambo. However, it was only completed and fully equipped under Governor Sani’s administration. “The Bola Ahmed Tinubu Specialist Hospital stands as a signature achievement of Governor Uba Sani’s administration. He gave it his all—failure was never an option,” Musa said. In light of these achievements, the Kaduna State Government remains committed to good governance, transparency, and sustainable development, and will not be distracted by misinformation or political bitterness. “Our focus is on serving the people of Kaduna State and building a united, inclusive, healthier, and more prosperous society—free from toxicity, discrimination, division, and exclusivity,” Ibraheem Musa reiterated.

EL-RUFAI LABELS TINUBU’S GOVERNMENT “MOST CORRUPT AND MOST INTOLERANT” IN NIGERIAN HISTORY

Former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has delivered a scathing critique of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing it as the most corrupt and intolerant government Nigeria has seen since the return to democracy in 1999. El-Rufai made these remarks while speaking with journalists in Katsina, where he had gone to commiserate with Governor Dikko Umaru Radda on the death of his mother. “This is the most corrupt and most intolerant government in Nigeria,” El-Rufai declared. “This is the most lying government that depends on false propaganda. They lied that security has improved in Nigeria.” He dismissed claims by the federal government that the security situation has improved, asserting that many communities in Katsina, Zamfara, and Sokoto are still plagued by violent insecurity. El-Rufai specifically pointed to the continued presence and activity of notorious terrorist leaders, including Dogo Gide, Mallam Abba, and Bello Turji. “In Kaduna, Dogo Gide is still around, Mallam Abba, the Boko Haram terrorist is still alive. Bello Turji is still around but every day, they announce names of people that are bandits’ leaders that they have killed and [say] security has improved,” he said. The former governor questioned the government’s credibility, asking, “How many local governments are under the occupation of bandits in Katsina State? How many are occupied by bandits in Zamfara State and some parts of Sokoto State? And because you are in government you think that nothing would happen?” El-Rufai also spoke about his political future, describing the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as a party of integrity poised to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections. “I have said it before, this is the worst Federal Government in Nigerian history and all the indices have shown it,” he concluded.

EL-RUFAI CLAIMS POLITICAL LEADERS KNEW ABOUT TINUBU’S DEGREE DISPUTE BEFORE 2023 POLLS, URGES OPPOSITION TO UNITE

Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, has revealed that political leaders, including himself, were aware of the ongoing controversy surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s academic records in the United States prior to the 2023 presidential election. Despite the allegations, they decided to back Tinubu, hoping he would bring the same level of success he achieved in Lagos to the entire nation. El-Rufai, who has since left the All Progressives Congress (APC) to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP), shared these details in a recent interview with BBC Hausa. He has become a strong critic of both the APC and the current Tinubu administration. In the same interview, El-Rufai urged opposition leaders to come together under one umbrella, specifically calling on prominent figures like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola to join the SDP ahead of future elections. He emphasized the need for a united front to challenge the ruling party effectively. Addressing accusations of disloyalty, particularly from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, El-Rufai defended his political choices, stating that his decisions are driven by a focus on performance and results rather than personal allegiances. The dispute over Tinubu’s academic credentials from Chicago State University (CSU) became a major talking point during the 2023 elections. While CSU confirmed that Tinubu did attend and graduate from the institution, it also clarified that the diploma he submitted to Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was not issued by the university, casting doubt on its validity. El-Rufai’s disclosures, along with rising dissatisfaction within the APC, have led to increased speculation about potential shifts in political alliances as the 2027 elections approach.

FORMER KADUNA GOVERNOR NASIR EL-RUFAI EXPRESSES REGRET OVER SUPPORT FOR PRESIDENT TINUBU, CITES DISAPPOINTMENT IN HIS LEADERSHIP

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has publicly expressed regret over his support for President Bola Tinubu, stating that he is disappointed by Tinubu’s failure to meet expectations despite his initial belief in the president’s potential. El-Rufai made these remarks during an interview with the press, where he reflected on his decision to back Tinubu’s presidential bid despite being aware of his controversial past. El-Rufai revealed that his support for Tinubu was largely based on the latter’s achievements as Lagos State governor, where he demonstrated significant leadership despite facing numerous challenges. “What pains me is that the government we supported and had confidence in would do well because we saw what Tinubu did in Lagos despite his challenges,” El-Rufai stated. He added that he believed Tinubu could replicate his Lagos success on a national scale, which motivated his endorsement. However, El-Rufai also acknowledged the controversies surrounding Tinubu’s past, including allegations of cocaine trafficking and certificate forgery. He specifically referenced the 1993 Chicago drug trafficking case, which led to Tinubu forfeiting $460,000 to U.S. authorities. “We all know about his issues in Chicago, but we thought if he could replicate his work in Lagos for Nigeria, let’s support him. However, he failed,” El-Rufai admitted. The scandal surrounding Tinubu’s alleged involvement in drug trafficking resurfaced in 2022 when new court documents revealed details of his encounter with U.S. authorities over narcotics trafficking and money laundering. Additionally, Tinubu’s academic records from Chicago State University became a subject of controversy, with opposition candidate Atiku Abubakar challenging their authenticity in court. El-Rufai’s comments highlight growing concerns among some of Tinubu’s former allies regarding his leadership and ability to deliver on his promises. The former governor’s remarks underscore the disappointment felt by those who had hoped Tinubu would bring transformative change to Nigeria, similar to his tenure in Lagos.

2027 POLL: EL-RUFAI SLICES, DICES TINUBU, RIBADU, SANI (1)

By Ehichioya Ezomon  Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, elder statesman, former Federal Commissioner, Leader of the Ijaw Nation, and Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), died on Monday, February 17, 2025, aged 97. Since his passing, the family home in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has become a melting port for “our leaders” to sympathise with the bereaved. What such a solemn occasion demands of the visitors is an expression of genuine sympathy and empathy mostly for the demised’s family members, friends and associates, the people of their tribal and ethnic nationality, State of origin and the entire country. This is done amid reminiscences of the life and times of the departed, especially a personality of Clark’s standing, an unpretentious patriot and nationalist, whose voice of reasoning and moderation on issues of equity, fairness, justice, and national cohesion rang loudly till he breathed his last on earth. Politicians – individually and severally – have been queueing to show their faces and pay last respects to the Patriarch of the Niger Delta. Friday, February 21, was “the turn” of a coterie of opposition members to pay a “condolence visit” to the Clark family. Peopled mainly by Northern politicians, and led by former Vice President and thrice Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the group postures for a political platform for an alliance, a coalition or a merger that can remove the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu from power in 2027. It’s debatable whether it’s Atiku that led the “condolence visitors,” but among the delegation was the new “enfant terrible” (a person who behaves in an unconventional or controversial way) of Northern politics, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, former Kaduna State Governor (2015-2023) and ex-Minister of the FCT. El-Rufai boasts of rallying, for the 2027 poll, a similar opposition movement that transformed into the APC in February 2013, and defeated then-ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015. Imbued with such a self-imposed responsibility, el-Rufai, at the condolence visit, veered into the politics of 2027 presidential contest, and craved for a North-South-South alignment to “rescue Nigeria” from the Tinubu administration.  El-Rufai urged the people of Niger Delta to continue with the good work of Pa Clark, noting that he really played a fatherly role throughout his lifetime. “I think the legacy of E.K. Clark and the work he has done should remind us all of the importance of being courageous, standing up for justice and risking everything for Nigeria,” el-Rufai said. Reflecting on the historical bond between the North and South-South, and imploring political stakeholders to restore that collaboration for the nation’s survival, el-Rufai declared: “In the 60s, 70s, and 80s, the North’s traditional political partners were from the South-South. Let us not forget that. Let us go back to that. Let us save this country because it really requires saving. We need a rescue operation.” As a pointer to whose trumpet the group blows, el-Rufai praised Atiku for his contributions to Nigeria’s economic development, particularly during his tenure as Vice President under President Olusegun Obasanjo (1999 to 2007). “Atiku was at the forefront of economic reforms that repositioned Nigeria during the Obasanjo administration,” el-Rufai said, adding, “Atiku’s role in attracting investment and restructuring the economy was crucial” – implying that an Atiku presidency will replicate what he did in government over two decades ago. El-Rufai’s solicitation reveals the actual purpose for the opposition visit to the Clark family: To capitalise on the emotional state of the bereaved, to score political points, and backing for a Northern presidency in 2027, unmindful of the zoning of the Presidency between the North and South of Nigeria every eight years. Embarking on an anti-Tinubu campaign, that the president hasn’t performed, and should be replaced in 2027, el-Rufai and his Northern colleagues make nothing of the zoning arrangement between the North and South that ensures equitable representation in a diverse society as Nigeria. For them, that “arrangement” was blatantly “breached” in 2011 when President Jonathan and the PDP refused the North to pick a Northerner to complete the “eight-year tenure” of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who died in 2010. Then-Vice President Jonathan from the South (and South-South) stepped in to complete the barely one-year remaining of Yar’Adua’s first term in office, and was supposed to pave the way for a Northerner to round-off the last four years of the Yar’Adua presidency. But Dr Jonathan refused to step down or step aside; and egged on by cheerleaders, he’s “coronated” as the PDP candidate, and subsequently won the presidential poll in 2011. If Northerners were mollified in 2011 to allow Jonathan to “usurp” the remaining four years of the Yar’Adua presidency, they didn’t condone a similar antic in 2015 when Jonathan wanted a “Third Term” – as critics put it, taking cognizance of his being sworn-in twice in 2010 (to succeed Yar’Adua) and 2011. Jonathan discountenanced his Oath of Office in 2010, whereas the amended 1999 Constitution of Nigeria states that, upon the resignation, removal or death of the President, the Vice President shall assume the position, to complete the term (not tenure), and could seek a second term if he hadn’t been sworn-in twice as President. Not surprising, Jonathan faced stiff opposition from within the PDP, especially in the North, during the 2015 election, to the extent that the party leadership in the region, and members of his campaign council sold out and betrayed him on Election Day.  For instance, Atiku – who’d defected to, and run for President under then-Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in 2007, and returned to the PDP before the 2011 election – led five PDP governors to walk out of the National Convention in 2014, and formed a factional New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP), which later dissolved into the APC, to wrest power from the PDP and Jonathan in 2015. On the APC side as the main opposition, el-Rufai was a major actor in the scotched-earth campaign that prevented Jonathan from being re-elected in 2015. Going personal (as he does currently) el-Rufai, on

KADUNA STATE GOVERNMENT, ICPC ACCUSED OF TARGETING FORMER OFFICIALS OVER LIGHT RAIL PROJECT

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is seeking the temporary forfeiture of N1.373 billion Kaduna State fund allegedly hidden in a Sterling Bank account. However, members of the former Kaduna State Executive Council (2015 to 2023) have denied any wrongdoing, stating that the project and payments were duly approved by the Kaduna State Executive Council and the Governor. According to the ICPC, the fund was diverted from the Kaduna Light Rail Project’s budget into the account of a private company, Indo Kaduna Marts JV Nig. Ltd. The commission claimed that the company was not registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) at the time the account was opened. However, the former officials argued that opening an account in the name of a company pre-incorporation is not a crime under Nigerian laws. The former officials alleged that the Kaduna State Government is using the ICPC to harass Sterling Bank and make it appear as though they did something wrong. They claimed that the ICPC forced Sterling Bank to produce and deposit the money with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and now Sterling Bank is trying to force Skipper to pay them the money despite the company having rendered services to the Kaduna State Government. “We challenge the purveyors of lies and falsehood to come forward with genuine documents to contradict any of the foregoing facts and we will respond accordingly,” the former officials said in a statement. They maintained that there was no iota of wrongdoing in the Kaduna Light Rail Project, which was as transparent as it was legitimate and lawful.

PRESIDENT TINUBU CONGRATULATES NASIR EL-RUFAI ON 65TH BIRTHDAY

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai on his 65th birthday, praising his endeavours for democracy, meritorious service to the nation, and mentorship of the younger generation. In a statement, President Tinubu acknowledged El-Rufai’s role in the dialogues leading up to the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his contributions to the party’s success in the 2015, 2019, and 2023 elections. The Special Adviser to the President, Bayo Onanuga, stated that President Tinubu commends El-Rufai’s resourcefulness and brilliance, noting that he is a founding member of the APC. Onanuga added that El-Rufai served as governor of Kaduna State for eight years and held various positions, including Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from 2003 to 2007. President Tinubu wishes El-Rufai good health and strength for continuous service to the nation. Onanuga stated that the President values El-Rufai’s contributions to the nation and looks forward to his continued service. Bayo Onanuga noted that this birthday wish is a testament to the President’s appreciation for El-Rufai’s dedication to democracy and national development.

EL-RUFAI ADMITS KADUNA STATE GOVERNMENT OPERATES KIDNAPPING GANG, SPARKING RENEWED CALLS FOR INFO ON MISSING CRITIC

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has admitted that the Kaduna State government operates a kidnapping gang. In a cryptic message on X (formerly Twitter), El-Rufai warned a follower against criticizing his political protégé-turned-enemy, Governor Uba Sani, to avoid suffering the same fate as others who were kidnapped and tortured by state-sponsored thugs. “Be careful, Imran @IU_Wakilii,” El-Rufai said, quoting the tweet criticizing Sani. He warned that “the Kaduna kidnapping team (I will reveal this next week, in sha Allah) will either try implementing the Danbilki Commander (abduct, whip and then offer money) or the Bashir Saidu (abduct and imprison) treatment on you.” He further advised critics of the Kaduna governor to “Please keep away from Kaduna and stay safe wherever you are.” El-Rufai’s message referenced the abduction and assault of Abdul-Majeed Al Mustapha, known as Dan-Bilki Komanda, by Sani’s supporters, revealing the state leaders’ alleged involvement in enforced disappearances. This admission comes almost six years after El-Rufai’s critic, Abubakar ‘Dadiyatta’ Idris, mysteriously vanished in 2019 and remains missing. Following Dadiyatta’s disappearance, amidst the trending #WhereisDadiyatta on X in December 2019, Bashir El-Rufai, one of the former governor’s sons, dismissed Nigerians pushing the campaign as “clowns,” suggesting Dadiyatta was suffering the consequences of his actions. “The same clowns who encouraged him when he was creating false stories and capitalising on lies that could endanger lives solely for political ends are the same individuals trending hashtags asking #WhereisDadiyata. Dangerous lies in the public space have consequences,” Bashir El-Rufai said at the time. El-Rufai’s recent revelation has sparked widespread debate on social media, with many now asking, “Where is Dadiyatta?” The UN reported in 2023 that Nigerian authorities are not doing enough to address enforced disappearances.
