NIGERIAN PRESIDENT DECLARES NATIONWIDE SECURITY EMERGENCY, ORDERS MASS RECRUITMENT INTO ARMY AND POLICE
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a nationwide security emergency and authorized the immediate recruitment of more personnel into the Armed Forces and the Nigeria Police. The President made the declaration in a statehouse statement, directing that the police recruit an additional 20,000 officers, bringing its total new recruitment to 50,000. To accommodate the new recruits, police authorities are authorized to use various National Youth Service Corps camps as training depots. Furthermore, officers being withdrawn from VIP guard duties are to undergo crash training for redeployment to security-challenged areas. The Department of State Services has also been ordered to immediately deploy all trained forest guards to flush out terrorists and bandits from the nation’s forests, with a directive to recruit more men for this purpose. In his address, President Tinubu stated, “This is a national emergency, and we are responding by deploying more boots on the ground. The times require all hands on deck. As Nigerians, we should all get involved in securing our nation.” He commended the security agencies for securing the release of abducted schoolgirls in Kebbi and worshippers in Kwara State, pledging to sustain efforts to rescue the remaining students of a Catholic School in Niger State and other hostages. The President charged the military leadership to remain resolute. “I charge you to remain resolute, to restore peace across all theatres of operation, and to uphold the highest standards of discipline and integrity. There must be no compromise, no collusion, and no negligence,” he said. He also called on the National Assembly to review laws to allow states to establish state police and urged states to reconsider establishing boarding schools in remote areas without adequate security. On the farmer-herder crisis, President Tinubu called on herder associations to end open grazing and surrender illegal weapons, stating, “Ranching is now the path forward for sustainable livestock farming and national harmony.” He expressed sympathy for families who lost loved ones in recent attacks in Kebbi, Borno, Zamfara, Niger, Yobe, and Kwara States, and paid tribute to fallen soldiers, including Brigadier-General Musa Uba. “Those who want to test our resolve should never mistake our restraint for weakness,” the President warned. He urged citizens not to succumb to fear or despair, saying, “Let’s stand together in purpose and strength to defend our freedom and values. We are in this fight together, and together we shall win.” The statement was dated November 26, 2025.
