POLICE ARREST SUSPECT FOR SPREADING FALSE INFORMATION AGAINST FORCE

The Nigeria Police Force has taken decisive action to curb the spread of fake news, disinformation, and incitement capable of widening the trust gap between the Police and members of the public. In a statement, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, revealed that on December 8, 2024, operatives of the Force apprehended one Destiny Ekhorutomuen, a 38-year-old suspect, in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Edo State. The suspect allegedly created and operated multiple social media accounts to disseminate false and inciting content aimed at provoking the public against the Nigeria Police. Adejobi stated that the Nigeria Police reiterates its zero tolerance for acts aimed at threatening the nation’s stability or tarnishing the reputation of the police and other government institutions. “This deliberate spread of falsehoods erodes public trust, undermines societal cohesion, and poses significant risks to national security,” he added. The Nigeria Police Force strongly warns against the misuse of social media and other communication platforms to propagate fake news or incite disorder. Adejobi emphasized that such acts are criminal and punishable under the law. Citizens are urged to exercise caution and responsibility in their use of information, as the collective peace and unity of the nation depend on it. Adejobi reassured the public of the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment to upholding law and order. He noted that the Force will continue to identify and prosecute individuals or groups engaging in activities that threaten Nigeria’s peace and security.

NIGERIA POLICE FORCE DEBUNKS FALSE CLAIMS ON SOCIAL MEDIA, CONDEMNS SPREAD OF MISINFORMATION

The Nigeria Police Force has addressed and clarified a false and misleading claim circulating on social media, made by Adamu Garba Zango, a lecturer at Baze University. In a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the claim alleged that a Deputy Commissioner of Police serving at the Kaduna State Police Command was arrested for supplying firearms to bandits and kidnappers. ACP Adejobi stated that the individual depicted in the shared photograph is not a serving member of the Nigeria Police Force. Investigations revealed that the man in the image is Kingsley Udoyen, a civilian arrested by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command on January 2nd, 2019, for impersonating an Assistant Commissioner of Police. ACP Adejobi emphasized that Udoyen was found to have been using a fake police rank to defraud and intimidate unsuspecting members of the public. Items recovered from his residence included an English pistol without ammunition and portraits of various police ranks. The Nigeria Police Force condemns the spread of false information, which not only tarnishes the image of the Force but also undermines public trust and safety. ACP Adejobi urged members of the public to verify information from credible sources before sharing. “The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to transparency, accountability, and the pursuit of justice,” ACP Adejobi said. “Spreading unverified claims is a violation of laws concerning defamation and cybercrime, and the Police may pursue appropriate legal action against individuals or entities involved in disseminating such falsehoods.” ACP Adejobi encouraged the public to follow the official channels of the Nigeria Police Force on social media for accurate information and updates, as follows:X (formerly Twitter): @PoliceNGInstagram: @nigeriapoliceforceFacebook: @ngpoliceYoutube: @PoliceNGTiktok: @ngpolice
