AKWA IBOM GOVERNOR ADVOCATES TRUE FEDERALISM, CITIZEN-CENTERED REFORMS

The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, has called for true federalism and citizen-centered reforms in the ongoing constitutional amendment exercise undertaken by the National Assembly. Represented by his Deputy, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, the Governor made the appeal at a public hearing for the South South geopolitical zone on the review of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The public hearing was held at the Four Points by Sheraton in Ikot Ekpene, and Governor Eno described the process as an important moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey. “The people of Akwa Ibom State are happy that this session is holding here,” he said. “It is beyond happenstance that this significant event is holding here in the ancient city of Ikot Ekpene, the raffia city, the cradle of Local Government administration and the oldest Local Government Area in Nigeria.” Governor Eno expressed optimism that the yearning of the people for true federalism would be given due prominence in the proposed review. “This theme resonates deeply with the yearning of the people of the South-South,” he said. “Indeed, it mirrors long-standing calls from this Region for a more just, responsive, and restructured Nigeria, where every federating unit can flourish, contribute meaningfully, and feel a sense of belonging.” The Governor emphasized the need to tread with caution while driving reforms, so as not to create a breeding ground for conflicts and chaos at the grassroots. He commended the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, for leading a transparent process in which all Nigerians could participate meaningfully. Senator Eyakenyi, the Deputy Governor, also commended the Senate President for his gender-friendly disposition and expressed optimism that he would support women in their agitation for a reserved seat in the legislature. She described Governor Eno as a gender-friendly leader, saying women have been carried along in his administration. In his remarks, Senator Akpabio noted that the participants were in attendance in large numbers to ensure that the Region would speak in one voice. He appreciated Governor Eno for his commitment to the event and hailed him as a peace-loving leader.

SENATOR NATASHA AKPOTI-UDUAGHAN ACCUSES SENATE PRESIDENT AKPABIO OF PLOTTING HER ELIMINATION, ALLEGES SEXUAL HARASSMENT

Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of orchestrating a plot to recall her from the Senate, eliminate her, and install a replacement, while alleging relentless sexual harassment. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, the senator claimed Akpabio colluded with former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello to strip her of security details, leaving her vulnerable to harm. Akpoti-Uduaghan stated, “Akpabio stripped me of my security to make me vulnerable. What other evidence do you need to know that he planned to eliminate me?” She alleged the Senate President’s “hatred and hostility” stemmed from her refusal to succumb to his sexual advances, leading him to block her legislative motions and contributions. “He refuses my motions and contributions because I refused his sexual advances. His not allowing my motions and contributions is frustrating. He wanted to break me down and succumb to his advances,” she said. The senator described enduring “unbearable” pressure, forcing her to publicly confront Akpabio. “I had to cry out because the hatred and hostility of Akpabio against me became unbearable. I’m passing through difficult moments but I remain resolute,” she declared. She further criticized the Senate Committee on Ethics, chaired by Senator Neda Imasuen, for suspending her for six months without a fair hearing, a move she claimed was politically motivated to silence her. Akpoti-Uduaghan urged women to resist intimidation, stating, “People especially women should find the courage to speak the truth.” She reiterated her resolve to continue her legislative duties despite the alleged gang-up, vowing, “I just wanted Akpabio to leave me alone.” The Senate has yet to formally respond to the allegations.

The Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Peace, Security, Good Governance, Equity and Justice has condemned Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s disruptive tendencies, particularly her recent violation of the Nigerian Senate Rules. In a press statement made available to journalists in Abuja, the group’s national coordinator, Comrade James Okoronkwo, stated that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, as a rookie senator, has been fairly treated, having been given the chairmanship of two Senate committees. The group’s statement highlights the importance of upholding the Nigerian Senate Rules and maintaining a respectful and parliamentary demeanor.
