Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has spoken publicly for the first time following a tragic car accident that claimed the lives of two of his close friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, on a major road near Lagos. Joshua, who sustained minor injuries in the incident, described the loss as deeply painful, noting that the victims were not only personal friends but also integral figures in his professional and business life. In a six-minute video message shared on his social media platforms, the boxer expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from fans and well-wishers while reflecting on his understanding of mortality. “One day my time will come, and I’m not scared at all,” Joshua said, adding that although he has confronted death before, the loss of Ghami and Ayodele has affected him in a profoundly different way. He explained that the relationship among the trio went beyond friendship, describing them as business partners and comrades who navigated life’s challenges together while pursuing shared dreams. Joshua said he is committed to honouring their memories by standing with their families and supporting them in achieving their aspirations. According to him, the tragedy has had a far-reaching impact, affecting not only immediate relatives but also friends, colleagues, and others whose lives the two men touched. He emphasised the sense of collective grief, noting that the pain of their loss is being shared across a wider community. Despite the tragedy, Joshua hinted at a return to training, suggesting that he intends to continue his boxing journey. Recent posts on his social media accounts reference what he described as “mental strength therapy,” indicating how he is coping with the loss. While he acknowledged uncertainty about his future in the sport, Joshua expressed appreciation for the support he has received from within and outside the boxing community, signalling his determination to move forward while preserving the legacy of his late friends.
