NIGER STATE GOVERNMENT SHUTS DOWN IBRAHIM BADAMASI BABANGIDA UNIVERSITY OVER SECURITY CONCERNS

The Niger State Government has ordered the immediate shutdown of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, due to escalating security threats in the area. The announcement was made by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, in Minna on Wednesday. “The safety of all citizens, particularly students, is a top priority for the government,” Usman said, appealing for calm and urging the university community to support security agencies. The decision to close the university follows a series of recent security incidents, including the fatal attack on a student near the campus, which triggered protests from the student community demanding accountability and enhanced protection measures. The closure comes after the killing of a 300-level student, Abdulkareem, who was reportedly attacked in his off-campus accommodation by suspected phone thieves just two days earlier. Usman assured that investigations were already underway to identify and bring to justice those responsible for the attacks. “The government is taking strategic steps to restore calm and ensure safety and stability around the university environment,” Usman added. The government has urged the university community to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies to ensure a swift resolution to the security challenges. The shutdown is aimed at ensuring the safety of students and staff while the government works to address the security concerns in the area. The state government has pledged to do everything possible to prevent such incidents in the future and to provide a safe and secure environment for all citizens.
