IGP EGBETOKUN SUMMONS POLICE OFFICERS CAUGHT COLLECTING CASH FROM CHINESE NATIONALS

Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has summoned the Provost of 1 Police Mobile Force (MOPOL) in Kaduna, DSP Aliyu Adejembi, and his team for questioning over a viral video showing them collecting cash handouts from Chinese nationals. The officers were reportedly on special duty with the Chinese businesspeople in Lagos when the incident occurred. The video, which sparked public outrage and raised concerns over police conduct, shows members of the MOPOL unit lining up to receive money from the Chinese individuals. According to the police wireless signal, the officers were directed to appear before the IG on April 16, 2025, at 9:00 am for a formal interview regarding their involvement in the incident. The incident has triggered fresh calls for greater accountability within the Nigerian Police Force, with many Nigerians demanding swift disciplinary action and systemic reforms to curb bribery, extortion, and abuse of power within law enforcement. However, the Nigeria Police Force is yet to issue an official public statement regarding potential disciplinary actions. Some Nigerians have expressed skepticism over the outcome of the investigation, with one commentator on Nairaland saying, “Nothing will still happen to the officers… Naija is a ZOO.” Another user, phemmie06, questioned the focus on the police officers, asking, “How many have been arrested for extorting the citizens?” Meanwhile, OriOko88 lamented the portrayal of Nigerian police, stating, “Africans are at the lowest ebb of human civilization and dignity”.
