DEPUTY SPEAKER KALU TO LEAD UNICAL’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

The University of Calabar is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary, and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, will lead the dignitaries and alumni to the event scheduled for March 20, 2025. Kalu, a worthy alumnus of the university, will deliver the 50th Anniversary/Convocation Lecture on the topic “Our Gown in Town and In Cyberspace: Sustainable and Human-Centered Education. The Mandate of Our Universities 2025 – 2075.” Kalu’s leadership skills and dedication to the university community have earned him numerous awards, including “The Most Distinguished Alumnus of the Faculty” and “Most Distinguished Ambassador.” His classmates from the Class of 1998, Faculty of Law, University of Calabar, nicknamed “The Golden Ones,” will attend the lecture in solidarity with him. During his time at the university, Kalu served in various capacities, including Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Inner Temple Chambers of the Faculty of Law and Secretary-General of the Electoral Council of the Faculty of Law. Kalu has pledged his support for initiatives to boost education in Nigeria, stating that education plays a critical role in shaping the future of the country. The University of Calabar’s 50th-anniversary celebration will feature a series of events, including an Alumni Walk, a football match, and a dinner. Kalu will also inspect the site for the Benjamin Okezie Kalu Convocation Arena, a project he will bequeath to the university.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES PROPOSES CREATION OF 31 NEW STATES

The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review has proposed the creation of 31 new states in Nigeria, which would bring the total number of states to 67. The proposal was contained in a letter read during Thursday’s plenary session by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session in the absence of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. Kalu According to the proposal, six new states would be created in the North Central, four in the North East, five in the North West, five in the South East, four in the South-South, and seven in the South West. Some of the proposed states include Okun, Okura, and Confluence states from Kogi; Benue Ala and Apa states from Benue; FCT state; Amana state from Adamawa; and Katagum from Bauchi. The committee outlined specific requirements that must be fulfilled to initiate the process of state creation, including a request supported by at least two-thirds majority of members representing the area demanding the new state. The proposal must also be approved by the House of Representatives, the House of Assembly in respect of the area, and the Local Government Council in respect of the area. Deputy Speaker Kalu directed that proposals shall be resubmitted in strict adherence to the stipulations. “Submit three hard copies of the full proposal of the memoranda to the Secretariat of the Committee at Room H331, House of Representatives, White House, National Assembly Complex, and Abuja,” he said. The committee remains committed to supporting the implementing efforts that align with the Constitutional provisions and would only consider proposals that comply with the stipulated guidelines. As Kalu noted, “The committee proposes the creation of 31 new states. As amended, this section outlines specific requirements that must be fulfilled to initiate the process of state creation”.

SENATE APPOINTS ORJI KALU AS CHAIRMAN OF SOUTH EAST DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION

The Senate has announced Senator Orji Uzor Kalu as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on South East Development Commission (SEDC), one of the Regional Development Commissions signed into law by President Bola Tinubu. The appointment was made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a plenary session in Abuja. Senator Ken Eze was also appointed as the vice chairman of the committee. Other members of the committee are expected to be announced soon. As chairman, Kalu will lead the committee in conducting oversight of the South-East Development Commission to achieve its objectives, including civil restitution, tackling erosion, restoration of security, and infrastructure development. Kalu, a senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, previously served as governor of Abia State from 1999 to 2007. He is also the chairman of SLOK Holding and the Daily Sun and New Telegraph newspapers in Nigeria.
