TRAGEDY STRIKES NIGERIAN SPORTS AS 21 KANO ATHLETES DIE IN ROAD CRASH

A devastating road accident has claimed the lives of 21 athletes from Kano State who were returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State. The accident occurred at Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State. The bus conveying the athletes fell off the bridge, resulting in the tragic loss of lives. According to the Kano State Sports Commission Chairman, Umar Fagge, several other athletes sustained injuries and were rushed to Kura General Hospital for medical attention. Fagge expressed shock over the incident, stating that efforts are underway to provide support to the victims’ families and ensure proper medical care for the injured. “We have counted 19 dead bodies,” Fagge initially said, though the Federal Road Safety Corps later confirmed 21 fatalities. The athletes were part of a larger contingent representing Kano State at the National Sports Festival. The Federal Road Safety Corps, Kano Sector Command, confirmed the accident and the casualties. Its Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Labaran, stated that a total of 32 persons were involved in the crash, comprising 31 male adults and one female adult. “Preliminary investigation indicates that 21 persons sadly lost their lives, while the remaining sustained varying degrees of injuries,” Labaran added. President Bola Tinubu has expressed sorrow over the tragic accident, describing it as a “devastating blow to the nation.” In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Kano State, as well as the families of the deceased. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also mourned the loss, calling for improved safety standards to prevent such occurrences. The Kano State Government has confirmed the incident, with officials describing it as one of the darkest moments in the state’s recent sporting history. The Nigeria Police Force has withdrawn its invitation to Alhaji Aminu Sanusi in connection with the unfortunate incident that occurred in Kano State during the Sallah celebration on March 30, 2025. Instead, operatives of the Force Intelligence Department (FID) have been directed to obtain Sanusi’s statement. In a statement, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the decision to withdraw the invitation was made following advice from respected stakeholders and in line with the Inspector-General of Police’s commitment to ensuring that policing actions are not politicized or misinterpreted. Adejobi noted that credible intelligence indicated that the two disputed Emirs in Kano State, Alh Ado Bayero and Alh Lamido Sanusi, were planning to hold separate Durbar Festivals, which could lead to violence. Adejobi stated that despite a mutual agreement between the police and the disputed emirs that no Durbar Festival would be held, Sanusi decided to mount a horse in a procession after Eid Prayers on Sallah Day, accompanied by local vigilantes. This triggered a confrontation that led to the tragic death of one Usman Sagiru and left several others injured. Adejobi reiterated that the police had earlier warned against this action and intended to avert it. The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to conducting its criminal investigation duties with professionalism, and all individuals found culpable will be brought to justice. Some arrests have been made, and the Force wishes to reiterate that its actions are guided by the principles of justice, neutrality, and professionalism. A tragic trailer accident in Kano has claimed the lives of 23 people, with 48 others injured, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano command. The accident occurred on Friday when a trailer carrying people and cargo lost control and collapsed at the Muhammadu Buhari flyover. The FRSC spokesperson in Kano, Abdullahi Labaran, stated that the accident was caused by dangerous driving on the part of the trailer driver, who was speeding and lost control of the vehicle. “Vehicle involved is a trailer (DAF Model) carrying goods and passengers; cause of RTC was dangerous driving due to over-speeding which resulted in the loss of control under the bridge; the total number of people involved was 71; total number of people injured was 48, and the total fatalities was 23,” Labaran said. In response to the incident, the sector commander, FRSC Kano sector command, CC UM Matazu, dispatched an investigation team to conduct a thorough inquiry into the crash. Matazu strongly warned drivers and the general public against overloading trailers with goods, animals, and passengers, stating that such practices significantly increase the risk of fatal crashes.

Abubakar Kabir Bichi Abubakar. Hon. Abubakar, to mention the least, has an ingrained selflessness, the type that was only exhibited by Sir Ahmadu Bello of blessed memory. None has been able to either imbibe or exhibit such quality after the departure from this world of the late Sage of Northern Nigeria, except this outstanding Parliamentarian. To Hon. Kabir Bichi committing to the needs of others by demonstrating personal sacrifice is synonymous to good governance, coupled with effective and efficient legislative representation. His political jurisdiction encompasses the entire country and his legacy of excellence, stretches far beyond the continent, exhibiting fresh and original humanism and godlike attributes. For instance, as the Chairman, House Committee on Works, Abubakar Kabir has provided legislative support and oversight, which has ensured that contractors and the Ministry of Works and Housing handling the constructions and supervision of various critical road projects across the country, are fully engaged while the works are all carried out according to specification.
