TRAGEDY STRIKES NIGERIAN SPORTS AS 21 KANO ATHLETES DIE IN ROAD CRASH
A devastating road accident has claimed the lives of 21 athletes from Kano State who were returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State. The accident occurred at Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State. The bus conveying the athletes fell off the bridge, resulting in the tragic loss of lives. According to the Kano State Sports Commission Chairman, Umar Fagge, several other athletes sustained injuries and were rushed to Kura General Hospital for medical attention. Fagge expressed shock over the incident, stating that efforts are underway to provide support to the victims’ families and ensure proper medical care for the injured. “We have counted 19 dead bodies,” Fagge initially said, though the Federal Road Safety Corps later confirmed 21 fatalities. The athletes were part of a larger contingent representing Kano State at the National Sports Festival. The Federal Road Safety Corps, Kano Sector Command, confirmed the accident and the casualties. Its Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Labaran, stated that a total of 32 persons were involved in the crash, comprising 31 male adults and one female adult. “Preliminary investigation indicates that 21 persons sadly lost their lives, while the remaining sustained varying degrees of injuries,” Labaran added. President Bola Tinubu has expressed sorrow over the tragic accident, describing it as a “devastating blow to the nation.” In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Kano State, as well as the families of the deceased. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also mourned the loss, calling for improved safety standards to prevent such occurrences. The Kano State Government has confirmed the incident, with officials describing it as one of the darkest moments in the state’s recent sporting history. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration has pledged to review safety measures for future travels involving official state teams and reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and safety of all its representatives in national events.
