LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT SLAMS CORPS MEMBER OVER “LAGOS IS SMELLING” COMMENT

The Lagos State Government has criticized a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Ushie Uguamaye, for stating that “Lagos is smelling.” The Director, Public Affairs of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Kunle Adesina, responded to Uguamaye’s comment, saying that despite her criticism, she still enjoys the city’s nightlife, as seen in her TikTok videos. Adesina stated that people like Uguamaye, who hold such views, are actually the ones who put undue pressure on the state’s infrastructure. “They can always say whatever they want to say, but what they fail to realise is that it is the same people who come into Lagos in droves, in thousands on a daily basis, that make a mess of all the steps that the state government is always putting in place,” he said. He further explained that these individuals are the ones who engage in street trading, selling at bus stops, and open defecation, thereby messing up the roads. “They are the ones who engage in it, and at the same time, they turn around to accuse the government of not doing what is right,” Adesina added. Uguamaye had sparked controversy with her comment, which was part of a 30-day rant challenge on TikTok, where she expressed her frustration with the economic hardship faced by Nigerians under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. However, she has since apologized for her statement, saying she didn’t mean to talk down on Lagos State.

SANWO-OLU’S HUMILITY AND COMPOSURE LAUDED AMID OBASA’S IMPEACHMENT

Bestman Nze-Jumbo, a close ally of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commended the governor’s calm demeanor and humility following the recent impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Speaking on Arise TV, Nze-Jumbo highlighted Sanwo-Olu’s consistent display of humility, even in the face of challenging circumstances. Bestman “In all this, you will never hear Babajide Sanwo-Olu make derogatory statements against Obasa or anyone perceived as a hindrance to his leadership,” Nze-Jumbo stated. “That shows the level of his humility, and it’s a lesson for all of us. Humility is key in Lagos politics. In the APC, no one can rise above the party.” Obasa’s impeachment was reportedly linked to tensions arising during the governor’s 2025 budget presentation, where Obasa allegedly kept Sanwo-Olu and his team waiting for hours before the Assembly convened. Nze-Jumbo dismissed speculation of animosity between the governor and Obasa, emphasizing Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to fostering harmony within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). “Probably, Obasa never thought 20 or 25 years ago that he would get to where he is now,” Nze-Jumbo said. “Humility in leadership is crucial, and that’s something Sanwo-Olu demonstrates consistently.” Nze-Jumbo, a philanthropist and communications expert, is a strong supporter of Sanwo-Olu’s administration and has initiated various programs to promote positive development in Lagos State.

LAGOS ASSEMBLY SPEAKER MUDASHIRU OBASA IMPEACHED OVER ALLEGATIONS OF CORRUPTION AND ABUSE OF OFFICE

Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has been impeached by 32 members of the House over allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement. Obasa’s impeachment comes amid accusations of gross misconduct and abuse of office, including the alleged spending of N17 billion on a gate to the assembly complex, which critics argue is excessive and fraudulent. The lawmakers subsequently elected Mojisola Meranda, representative of Apapa I, as the new speaker. Meranda, in her oath of office, pledged to perform her functions honestly and in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “I affirm that I will be faithful as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly; That I will perform my functions honestly to the best of my ability, faithfully, and in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” she said. The Deputy Chief Whip, Hon Fatai Mojeed, was also elected as the Deputy Speaker. Obasa’s impeachment has been a subject of controversy, with some of his supporters attempting to invade the assembly complex. However, security personnel intercepted and arrested the miscreants, recovering charms and amulets from them. The Clerk of the Assembly, Olalekan Onafeko, who was reportedly single-handedly brought to the assembly by Obasa, was also removed from office. Both Obasa and Onafeko were behind the ban on journalists covering the activities of the assembly. The premises and environs of the assembly have been taken over by armed personnel of the Rapid Response Squad, Lagos Task Force, and the Police, who have turned back motorists and persons from gaining access.
