The Lagos State House of Assembly has called leaders of Makoko and adjacent waterfront communities for a meeting on February 3, 2026, following widespread public outcry over recent demolitions. The invitation responds to petitions from affected residents, who allege the exercise displaced thousands without notice, compensation, or resettlement plans. Community leaders claim the demolition exceeded agreed boundaries near high-tension power lines, destroying homes, schools, and clinics, and forcing many to live on boats. Several deaths were reported, including a three-week-old infant.
